World Patient Safety Day: Putting People First with Frontier Medical Group
26 September 2025
Every year on 17 September, the World Health Organisation marks World Patient Safety Day, which is a global call to action to make healthcare safer for all. Patient safety lies at the heart of quality care, yet is an area that requires constant innovation, collaboration, and vigilance.
At Cardiff Medicentre, we’re proud to support MedTech companies working on solutions that put patient wellbeing first. One of those companies is Frontier Medical Group, whose products and services are designed to reduce risk and improve outcomes in healthcare settings.
To mark this important day, we spoke with Chris and Lisa from Frontier about what patient safety means to them, how it shapes their work, and their vision for safer healthcare in the future.
💬 What does patient safety mean to Frontier Medical Group?
🗨️ “At Frontier Medical Group, patient safety means safeguarding individuals from preventable harm, with a strong focus on pressure ulcer prevention. Pressure ulcers are a recognised quality indicator of patient care, and when they occur, they can cause significant pain, emotional distress, and negatively affect health outcomes. Our commitment to patient safety is twofold: preventing these injuries wherever possible and ensuring effective, timely management when they do occur.”
💬 How do Frontier Medical Group’s products and services directly improve patient safety?
🗨️ “Our Repose® range is designed to protect patients of all ages and across all care settings. Multiple studies, including randomised controlled trials (RCTs), have demonstrated that patients using Repose are significantly less likely to develop pressure ulcers compared to other interventions. In fact, our most recent RCT showed incidence rates were reduced by half when compared with alternating mattresses, which are widely regarded as the gold standard in pressure area care.
With our Toto® automated lateral turning system, we regularly hear testimonials from patients and carers about the difference it makes – not only in supporting pressure ulcer healing, but also in enabling people to remain in their preferred place of care, with greater independence, dignity, and quality of life.”
💬 Can you share a story where Frontier Medical Group’s impact on patient safety was experienced first-hand?
🗨️ “One powerful example comes from within our own team. A Frontier colleague used Toto® alongside her sister to care for their 99-year-old father at home during his end-of-life journey. Without Toto, he would have required admission to hospital or residential care. Instead, the system allowed him to remain at home, surrounded by his family, while ensuring his skin integrity was effectively managed. This story highlights the profound role our products can play in both patient safety and quality of life.”
💬 How will technology and innovation shape patient safety in the next 5–10 years?
🗨️ “Healthcare is moving towards smarter, more connected solutions that support safe and effective care in the home. At Frontier, we are already contributing to this future with innovations such as Toto®, our automated lateral turning system, which protects patients at risk of pressure injury while reducing the burden on carers.
Looking ahead, we anticipate systems becoming increasingly intelligent, integrated, and data-driven – providing real-time monitoring and remote care capabilities. These advancements will not only enhance patient safety but also support the wider healthcare goal of shifting care into the home environment.”
💬 How do Frontier Medical Group team members feel about working on products that directly affect patient safety?
🗨️ “Our team members are deeply motivated by the knowledge that their work has a direct impact on patient wellbeing. While they may not be delivering hands-on care, they play a crucial role in supporting those who do. Training and education are central to our approach, with every staff member receiving clinical insights into skin health, pressure ulcer prevention, and the consequences for patients when ulcers develop.
This shared understanding reinforces the importance of what we do at Frontier: equipping healthcare professionals with the right tools and knowledge to protect patients, prevent harm, and promote safety every day.”
World Patient Safety Day is a reminder that safer healthcare depends on the combined efforts of innovators, clinicians, and patients themselves. Frontier Medical Group’s commitment to building safety into every aspect of their work shows how medtech companies can play a vital role in this mission.
