Congratulations to MEAD co-convenors Dr Anna Skeels and Dr Sofia Vougioukalou for their recognition at Cardiff University\u2019s Celebrating Excellence Awards<\/p>\n
Anna was a finalist in Global-Civic category. This category aims to celebrate staff who embody Cardiff\u2019s evolving Global-Civic mission: co-creating cultural, economic, environmental, and social value locally and globally, and who actively embed social responsibility in education, research, scholarship, and operations.\u00a0 Anna is a Research Fellow in the SPARK Hub Team<\/a> with a remit for research collaboration across academic and professional staff, students, external partners from private, public and Third Sectors. Anna set up and leads the SPARK Third Sector Research Partnership<\/a>, driving more equitable engagement with the Third Sector and providing pro bono research support from academics and students to small Third Sector organisations in the Cardiff Capital Region. Anna has also led on a collaboration with the EDI Hub, academic and professional staff, students and external partners BAWSO, EYST and Race Council Cymru, to co-develop an Antiracist Living Lab (ARLL) for Cardiff University.<\/a> The ARLL will contribute robust evaluation, co-creation activity and increased external accountability to the University\u2019s delivery against its Race Equality Chartermark.\u00a0 Anna\u2019s research with children affected by Modern Slavery in England and Wales, with its focus on positive outcomes for these children, including through her co-authored book on Human Trafficking of Children and Young People<\/em><\/a>, <\/em>is helping to reframe how these children are perceived in society.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Sofia was the winner of the Co-creation and Participative Leadership category. This category aims to celebrate individuals who demonstrate exceptional participative leadership and commitment to shaping the future through social, academic, or entrepreneurial initiatives. Sofia is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Adult Social Care Research<\/a> (CARE), the Centre for Trials Research<\/a> (CTR) and the Centre for Vision Services Research<\/a> (CVSR) with a remit to develop high quality impactful bids. She is also the CARE public involvement academic lead and dementia thematic group lead, the CTR Population Health and Social Care Division lead for public involvement and the CVRS co-lead for Transforming sight impairment and rehabilitation pathways. \u00a0She is also a trustee of Women Connect First<\/a>, a charity that support ethnic minority women in Wales. Sofia has shown exceptional commitment\u00a0 to including and co-leading with people with lived experiences. Her co-production practice extends beyond university buildings and Teams calls to parks, festivals, community kitchens and arts classes. Over 100 participants with lived experiences of cancer, dementia, loneliness and social isolation, their family carers and people who support them professionally took on roles advising on the design of research and leading on dissemination including co-authoring publications and evidence briefings. This has included people who are British Sign Language users, people with a hearing impairment, visual impairment, people who has lost their vision due to cancer, ethnic minority elders with limited English proficiency and members of the LGBTQ+ community. More recently she has included people with lived and professional experiences as named co-applicants in three research bids (total \u00a31M) to the National Institute for Health Research and the British Academy. As a co-convenor of the Migration, Ethnicity and Diversity research group she has co-led for the last three years an annual community engagement event tailored for ethnic minority communities in Grangetown in collaboration with the Alzheimer\u2019s Society, Muslim Doctors Cymru and the Community Gateway team at the Grangetown Pavilion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Congratulations to MEAD co-convenors Dr Anna Skeels and Dr Sofia Vougioukalou for their recognition at Cardiff University\u2019s Celebrating Excellence Awards Anna was a finalist in Global-Civic category.
