On Saturday 5th\u00a0of October 2024,\u00a0<\/span>Black History Cymru 365<\/a><\/u>\u00a0presented\u00a0Professor Sin Yi Cheung<\/a><\/u>\u00a0 with a Community Award for her contributions to Race Equality, Inclusion and Research. The award was presented during their annual Black History Month celebration in the Senedd.<\/div>\n

Professor Uzo Iwobi CBE FLSW FRSA, Founder & CEO Race Council Cymru said: <\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Cheung is a Professor of Sociology and Director of Research in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. She is trained as a quantitative sociologist and her research addresses different forms of social inequalities in contemporary societies. She has published on refugee integration, the changing inequalities in higher education, ethnic and religious penalties in the labour market, lone parents on benefits, claimants’ dynamics, and children in care.<\/div>\n

Elected as a Fellow of\u00a0the Learned Society of Wales<\/a>\u00a0<\/u>in 2022, she held various leadership roles, including International Director (2014-2017) and as Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers of Sociology: Race and Ethnicity.<\/a><\/u> In 2019, she established the Migration, Ethnicity, Race and Diversity Research Group. She was a full member of the national assessment panel (Social Work and Social Policy sub-panel) in the UK Research Innovation \u2013 Research Excellence Framework 2021 and the Research Centres Grant Competition of the Economic and Social Research Council. Internationally, she has been appointed by the Hong Kong University Grants Council to serve on the Social Sciences Panel of the Research Assessment Exercise in 2026.<\/div>\n
