The module aims to teach social theory differently: to teach students about the value of social theory not through abstractions or catalogues of dead people, but rather through the application of social theory to live issues in contemporary social life via concepts developed by social theorists who are alive. The focus is on how social theory can help us understand current social issues. To this end, assessment for this module includes a 1000 word &#8220;manifesto&#8221;, written about a social issue of the students&#8217; choosing. Students are encouraged write in the combative, change-orientated style of manifestos published by social scientists. Each year, staff who have led this module have been in awe of manifestos produced by students: the range of ideas, the quality of the writing, the application of concepts, are frequently outstanding. They exhibit what students are able to achieve when encouraged to use sociology to engage with issues they care about, and what sociology is able to achieve when applied by engaged minds to crucial social issues. In 2025, it was decided that the quality of the manifestos is too high for them to remain in submission boxes for only markers to see.
