This is what is making the difference for some businesses to evolve faster than others, adding competitive advantage. The business <\/strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessforum.com\/clockspeed.html\"><strong>clock speed<\/strong><\/a><\/em><strong>, as Charles Fine calls it, determines how fast any industry is evolving according to the complexity of the activities performed, but the digital evolution has made everything move faster in some ways, also adding more complexity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some of the most\nimportant trends that are influencing the future of supply chains: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>A<\/strong>utonomous business units <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Fast decision making<\/em> relies on having small independent groups that can take their own decisions but also <em>coordinate<\/em> with other teams, like an army campaign, but without war. Every team must be aware of the implications of each decision, looking for <em>optimization<\/em> but <em>adaptation<\/em> along the journey, someone said <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apm.org.uk\/resources\/find-a-resource\/agile-project-management\/\">AGILE<\/a><\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"302\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/logistics-manufacturing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/566\/2019\/11\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/logistics-manufacturing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/566\/2019\/11\/image.png 350w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/logistics-manufacturing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/566\/2019\/11\/image-300x259.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(CIO, 2019)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>B<\/strong>lockchain visibility<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping track of everything that happens in your supply chain is difficult, but one of the technologies that promises to make it possible is <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/operations\/our-insights\/blockchain-technology-for-supply-chainsa-must-or-a-maybe\">BLOCKCHAIN<\/a><\/em> with its <em>collective-distributed network<\/em>, where also everybody is made <em>accountable<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"494\" height=\"247\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/logistics-manufacturing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/566\/2019\/11\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/logistics-manufacturing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/566\/2019\/11\/image-1.png 494w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/logistics-manufacturing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/566\/2019\/11\/image-1-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Disruptor daily,\n2019)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>C<\/strong>loud-based shared platforms<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Accessibility<\/em> from anywhere by anyone who\u2019s authorized which could make the processes more efficient by <em>sharing capabilities<\/em> among the different businesses (i.e. Economies of Scale and Lean). &nbsp;Why buy a software license? just rent it for the time you use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/logistics-manufacturing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/566\/2019\/11\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-192\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Direction forward,\n2019)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>D<\/strong>igital-value chains<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Feedback enhanced consumer interaction<\/em> through <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s7wmiS2mSXY\">API<\/a><\/em> in a mobile interconnected environment (i.e. IoT). A service where most companies are exploding now is the information collected from the internet and the apps that people use to foresee their behaviour. <em>Predictive environments<\/em> might be able to make more accurate <em>forecasting<\/em> in the future, which will allow to <em>reduce costs<\/em> and <em>increase profits<\/em> for companies as <em>variability is reduced<\/em>. The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/circular-economy\/concept\">circular economy<\/a><\/em> is finding more echo around the world, some people prefer a clean world (i.e. 5 S\u2019s) some others are starting to realize the effects of global warming. Algorithms and super\ncomputers can help to provide fast information and take <em>automated decisions<\/em>.\nApplications are related with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reliableplant.com\/Read\/12495\/preventive-predictive-maintenance\">predictive\nmaintenance<\/a><\/em> in the manufacturing environment, which is a\ncontrolled environment in terms of variables. As technology evolves, more\napplications will surge in an <em>open loop environment<\/em> where almost\nanything can alter your process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>R<\/strong>esilient supply chains: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Humanitarian supply chains<\/em> confront difficult situation in which they need authorization for treatment with non-standardized products, so sometimes they must improvise and create a hack to overcome restraints.
