2017-18 plans

10 October 2017

As we begin a new academic year, it’s nice to reflect back on the past year. It was very busy!  We welcomed over 7 visiting scholars interested in SFL.  Together with our postgraduate students, staff and visiting scholars we met several times over the year to discuss our research interests. We gave a lot of time to middle constructions and ergativity and this generated a lot of very interesting discussions. In January we hosted the 2017 Cardiff Symposium in honour of Professor Robin Fawcett.  During the symposium we had two very intense days of talks, discussions and workshops. I was on research leave over the past year and got to travel to many places include KU LeuvenRWTH Aachen, Guangzhou to attend the inaugural Halliday and Hasan Forum, Studying language in context: Exploring SFL advances in theorizing and appliability, which was held 3-4 December, 2016 at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Over the summer, many of us attended the European SFL conference in Salamanca Spain and the international SFL congress in Wollongong Australia.

This year in 2017-2018, we have welcomed new visiting scholars from China and we will continue with our seminar programme. In June 2018 we have organised a special event in honour of Margaret Berry, the Nottingham Workshop, see details here.
