LEDS session 10th April – Data session: Communicating Assisted Voluntary Return programmes to migrants

8 April 2019

Our final LEDS meeting of the spring term will take place this coming Wednesday, 10 April from 4.30-5.30pm (optional discussion until 6pm) in Room 2.47, John Percival Building.  This session is a data session, giving us the opportunity to explore how linguistic ethnographic projects generate different forms of data, and some of the ways in which these can be analysed.

We are delighted that Katy Brickley has agreed to share with us some data from her PhD research about how organisations communicate with asylum seekers and migrants about Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) programmes.  Katy’s research explores how inequality occurs – and is challenged – within AVR repatriation programmes for asylum seekers and irregular migrants. Katy draws on discourse analysis and linguistic ethnography to examine the voluntariness of AVR and applicants’ opportunities to make informed decisions about return.

Come prepared for an interactive and hands-on session!

We have three further sessions planned for next term, starting on 8 May with a session about online linguistic ethnography facilitated by Dr Tereza Spilioti – more details to follow.

Best wishes,

Judith and Piotr
