By becoming a\ncommittee member of a society, you are not only demonstrating your leadership\nskills, but also your commitment, organisation and problem-solving skills. You\ncould become the President, the vice president, the treasurer, or (depending on\nthe society) the kit secretary – or even the beginners trip organiser. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cardiff Award<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps the best way to\nboost your employability would be to complete the Cardiff award. This is a\nprogram that is focused on improving your employability skills. The only criteria\nis that you are a student at Cardiff University: you can be in any year \u2013 from first year\nundergraduate to postgraduate. Your extra-curricular activities are recognised\nas an integral part of this program and it is very flexible alongside your\nstudies. You can do it all in one year or over the course of a few years. One\nsection even allows you to practise the recruitment process. There are three\nsections: Explore, Develop and Complete. In the Explore section you learn about\nyourself and your traits through the Personality Indicator. In the develop\nsection you focus on your work experience and employability skills. Then\nfinally, in the complete section you take part in a mock recruitment process.\nYou must have 70 hours of experience in a minimum of two activities upon\ncompletion and have completed online employability sections with a CV. To sign\nup click here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Cardiff University\noffers a variety of different free language courses. You could learn: Russian,\nArabic, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish or\nWelsh. With the option to do a different language every term or improve a\nsingle language over the course of your studies, you have the opportunity to\nreally widen your skills. With weekly lessons, this side course offers 10\ncredits towards your end degree. Lots of employers look for graduates with\nlanguage skills as it widens the horizons of the company. Russian and Arabic\nspeakers are in particularly high demand, if you can get past the difficulty of\nlearning the language \u2013 your employability will skyrocket!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Employers really like\ncandidates with experience in their chosen field. Some degrees offer placement\nyears, while others do not. Just because your degree does not offer a placement\nyear, it does not mean you cannot take one. If you show the university that a\ndeferred year would be put to good use you can choose to take a year out of\nuniversity and take part in a placement. This takes a lot of self-motivated research\nand is hard work but is ultimately very rewarding. If you cannot or do not want\nto do a placement, there are other options. For example, some of the societies\ninclude Radio broadcasting, a student newspaper and a magazine. The Gair Rhydd\noffers writing opportunities to budding journalists, from politics, and science\nsections to advice sections it really does offer lots of different article\nopportunities. If magazine articles are more up your street why not try Quench,\nfrom vintage fashion to Literature reviews this magazine offers lots of\nopportunities including page\/graphic design.
