What was the most rewarding aspect of your experience on the team last year?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\nLast year, I was Editor-in-Chief of\nCardiff University\u2019s mini-magazine, Q3. I had never been a part of Cardiff\nStudent Media before, or anything else of a similar scale and I was so\nincredibly nervous to undertake the role. However, I constantly surprised\nmyself throughout the year and it was really exciting to see what my team and I\nwere able to create. Therefore, I think the most rewarding aspect of my\nexperience on the team last year was the way in which it changed me and showed\nme I\u2019m capable of a lot more if I\u2019m willing to push myself out of my comfort\nzone. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nWhat exactly does your role entail as Editor-in-Chief? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe role of Editor-in-Chief has a lot of\nresponsibilities, on the one hand there is the admin side, which involves\ncreating the calendar, ensuring everyone meets their deadlines, answering\nemails, solving problems and enforcing the student media code. However, there\nis also the creative side, which entails writing articles, designing pages,\ncreating layouts, promoting content and organising socials. I\u2019m surprised each\nand everyday in this role, so many different situations have arisen that I never\nthought I would have to face (for example, adapting to COVID-19), but it\u2019s all\npart of the fun. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nWhat are you most looking forward to this year Working on Quench?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m looking forward to so many aspects of the\ncoming year, but I\u2019d say I\u2019m most excited to meet and get to know the team. In\na few short months, my Deputy Editor, Elly Savva has become a really close\nfriend of mine. That\u2019s the beauty of something like Cardiff Student Media, due\nto the nature of the job, you\u2019re guaranteed to meet kind, passionate and\neccentric people that support you but also challenge you. Another aspect of\nQuench I\u2019m really looking forward to this year is being able to use the\nplatform to amplify student voices and discuss important subjects. Elly and I\nhave added a new section to the magazine, entitled \u2018Spotlight\u2019, which will\ncontain longer, more researched pieces and their focus this year is sex and\nrelationships. We\u2019re also planning to discuss the Black Lives Matter movement,\nenvironmental issues and the LGBTQ+ community, as well as possibly even\ndedicating entire issues to them, which we hope will help the Cardiff\nUniversity student body feel better represented. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nWhat is the social side of the magazine like?\n<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe social side of the magazine is\nextensive, there are so many different groups of people to interact with such\nas the editorial team, design team, social media team, contributors and not to\nmention the other Cardiff Student Media platforms (Gair Rhydd, Xpress and\nCUTV). Quench, in particular, meet throughout the year for all different types\nof events. This year we\u2019re hoping to have a board game social, cinema trips and\nquiz nights alongside our alcoholic outings. On top of this, we also hold\nevents for different holidays and even attend awards evenings every now and then.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\nWhat piece of advice would you give new students looking to get involved?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\nIn my short time as Editor-in-Chief this\nyear, I\u2019ve realised one thing in particular, from the outside looking in,\nCardiff Student Media can seem like an intimidating place. I remember in my\nfirst year, I was really passionate about journalism, but it took all of my\nconfidence to merely approach the Quench stall to ask how to start\ncontributing. Even in my second year, as a member of the team, I was often too\nshy to fully integrate myself into the team. However, only now as\nEditor-in-Chief do I realise how groundless my worries were, everyone I\u2019ve met\nhas been so incredibly welcoming. Not to mention the fact that the team changes\nevery year, I\u2019d say only 20% of our current team have been a part of Quench\nbefore and previous members almost always apply for new roles to try something\ndifferent. Therefore, everyone is in the same boat, even in my role as\nEditor-in-Chief I\u2019m constantly<\/em> learning. Moreover, my advice is to do what I did\nand push yourself to join (even if it takes all the confidence you have). These\nlast two years, I\u2019ve learnt how to use Adobe Suite, hired an entire team and\npublished three whole magazine issues.
