The best places for vegetarian and vegan food in Cardiff
28 Chwefror 2017I have been vegetarian for just over three years and most of this time I’ve spent living in Cardiff. I spend a lot of my leftover money on trying new places to eat and naturally I skip over everything else on the menu to seek out those with a ‘V’ next to them. I’ve rounded up a selection of my favourite places to get vegetarian food in Cardiff, some which also offer vegan food that I’ve also pointed out (some a little more student budget friendly than others, I must admit)! All photographs are my own (yes, I’m one of those terrible people who insists on taking a photo of their food).

Wahaca
Wahaca is my favourite place to eat in Cardiff. A mexican street-food chain with a twist, Wahaca was co-founded by Masterchef winner Thomasina Miers and is gradually opening more and more chains around the UK. Cardiff’s Wahaca was one of the first to open outside London and boasts a contemporary and truly Instagrammable vibe. Wahaca offer larger dishes but my food of choice is the tapas-style street food dishes, so you can sample 3/4 tasty treats.
Menu highlights: Sweet potato and feta taquitos, black bean and cheese quesadillas. Wahaca are known to be very accommodating of vegans (a lot of the vegetarian options can be made vegan).
Price range: £3.95 – £12.25
51 – 53 The Hayes, St David’s Dewi Sant, Cardiff CF10 1GA
2. Anna Loka
Anna Loka is a vegan restaurant situated on Cardiff’s Albany Road. Though it’s a bit further out for freshers, its well worth the journey to get your hands on some delicious plant-based grub.
Menu highlights: King Avocado wrap, The Ultimate Burger and the Thai Green Curry with Red and White Coconut Quinoa
Price range: £3 – £11.50
114 Albany Rd, Cardiff CF24 3RU
3. Milgi
Plant-based restaurant Milgi also doubles up as a cool place for cocktails, but food-wise caters for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Situated on City Road, again this is quite a trip for first years but is well worth it for the contemporary and chilled atmosphere and yummy food. Milgi also serves a plant-based Sunday roast!
Menu highlights: Vegan meatballs, Polenta roasted squash, Banana and Apple crumble
Price range: £4 – £11.50
4. Falafel Kitchen
On Cardiff’s Crwys Road, Falafel Kitchen is famous for its… well, Falafel! £4.75 will get you a pitta bread filled with hummus and the best falafel you will ever try – and there’s a salad bar full to add your own fresh salad to it. A healthy alternative to a fast lunch, the pittas will fill you up for the day!
Menu highlights: Apart from the best falafel you’ll probably ever try, Falafel Kitchen does sides of halloumi as well as meat-based snacks.
Price range: Expect to pay around £4.75 for a pitta.
213 City Rd, Cardiff CF24 3JD
5. Society Standard
Society Standard was the place of choice for my birthday meal this year. Located on Whitchurch Road it’s in walking distance of both Cathays and Tally and offers a range of meaty, veggie and vegan dishes. The place is very stylish and also offers brunch and Sunday menus.
Menu highlights: Truffled mac ‘n’ cheese, Smokey black bean chilli (available as a vegan option), Avocado on toast
Price range: £2.80 – £11.95

7. Waterloo Tea
Waterloo Tea is based in the Wyndham Arcade just opposite John Lewis in the City Centre. Offering afternoon teas as well as breakfast, lunch and larger dishes, it’s a great place to take the parents when they’re visiting.

8. Mezza Luna
Lebanese restaurant Mezza Luna on City Road provides a great dining experience for vegetarians, vegans and meat eaters. They offer smaller tapas-style dishes as well as larger plates such as tagines.
Menu highlights: Falafel, halloumi, tahini – all tapas style with amazing flatbread, Berber Tagine

9. Chai Street
Chai Street is situated on Cardiff’s High Street (though there’s a sister branch on Cowbridge Road and their parent restaurant Mint and Mustard on Whitchurch Road) – I visited as part of a food evening for Quench Magazine (the University’s student magazine) and I was really impressed. My vegetarian dish was the vegetable thali, which included two vegetarian dishes, Dal, Raita, pickles, mini pappdads, rice and Nan bread all for £8.95. The cocktails are huge and super affordable too, FYI. They also do smaller ‘street delights’ type dishes.
Menu highlights: The thalis are a go-to – they feature a selection of dishes and sides and are super filling!

11. Stag Coffee
Situated on Crwys Road, Stag do an amazing mexican-style veggie burger and their fries are honestly the best in the land. Stag is usually quite busy so it’s worth visiting when it’s not peak time but the staff are really accommodating. Once we could only find seats outside and the staff brought us hot water bottles!
Menu highlights: Halloumi and Cranberry burger, Veggie Mex
Price range: £1.95 – £7.95
83 Crwys Rd, Cardiff CF24 4NF
