LGBTQ+ Pride in Cardiff
27 Chwefror 2020It is February, which means it is also LGBTQ+ history month – a time to celebrate the community and draw attention to pressing issues that continue to affect many individuals across the U.K.
The university is committed to championing its LGBT students and are highly regarded by Stonewall as one of the most LGBTQ+ inclusive universities in the UK. One of its most significant support networks is the LGBT+ Association which works alongside the Student’s Union in order to improve and support the experiences of its students through a number of on-campus campaigns.
Additionally, the CU Pride (LGBT+ Society) is open for anyone to join and is a great place to meet new friends. The society puts on a number of fun socials and events throughout the year – whether it be alcoholic or non-alcoholic!
Ultimately, Cardiff is proud to be an LGBTQ+ friendly city and has a whole host of activities to cater to everyone’s interests.
Best LGBTQ+ Bars and Clubs:
Pulse
Pulse is the place to go if you just want to let loose and dance like no-one is watching. Playing everything from Ru Paul to Beyoncé, Drag Queens are often spotted paying visits to the club which also serves very cheap drinks. If you want to have your first taste of the LGBTQ+ scene in Cardiff, this is the place to go.
The Kings
Another favourite is The Kings, a large and modern bar which hosts a different event every night of the week. If you are looking for your cocktail fix, this is also the place to get it. Cocktails are 2-for-1 Sunday to Thursday, costing just £5.50 each, or £10 for a pitcher.
WOW Bar
Often attracting the young, student crowd, this bar operates as a café by day, but hosts Cabaret by night. WOW bar has recently moved locations, meaning it is now the closest LGBT bar to the student area of Cathays.
Minsky’s Showbar
Minsky’s specialises in Drag Queen and Cabaret entertainment and is a firm favourite with stag and hen do’s. If you’re looking for a care-free night of fun then head over on a Friday or Saturday night and you won’t be disappointed.
Mary’s
Located on St Mary’s Street, this bar well-known for its drag shows, themed events and karaoke nights. With a friendly atmosphere and great drinks, Mary’s is open seven days a week and is a great place to chill with friends.
Events:
Pride
Being of course, the ultimate celebration of LGBTQ+ pride, this year the event will take place between the 28th-30th August. In 2019, Pride attracted over 50,000 people to the Welsh capital in order to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and advocate equality and diversity throughout the community. Cabaret, live drag shows, music performances and guest speakers can all be expected on this weekend of family fun.
