The Imitation Game is a new method for social research. It was invented at Cardiff and, over the past five years, its development has been funded by an Advanced Research Grant (269463 IMGAME) from the European Research Council. In this plenary session, which opens our annual workshop on the Study of Expertise and Experience, we present the highlights of this work and identify some future directions for Imitation Game research. The presentations draw on work carried out across Europe and in South Africa and address a range of topics and theoretical approaches. Please join us in celebrating what has been a fascinating experiment in sociological method.
