{"id":455,"date":"2026-09-11T05:00:53","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T04:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/?p=455"},"modified":"2026-09-11T06:47:49","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T05:47:49","slug":"a-neet-solution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/a-neet-solution\/","title":{"rendered":"A NEET solution?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With apologies for the awful pun, Community Housing Cymru put out <a href=\"https:\/\/chcymru.org.uk\/news-and-blog\/chc-calls-for-a-construction-skills-strategy-to-tackle-wales-neet-crisis\">a press release<\/a> this week about their <a href=\"https:\/\/chcymru.org.uk\/cms-assets\/global\/NEET-FINAL-August-2026.docx.pdf\">research into the analysis of trends in Wales about NEETs<\/a> (ie young people who are neither in education, employment or training).\u00a0 This group has grown in proportion since 2021, and now exceeds the UK average, and is greater than Scotland or England such that &#8220;the Welsh increase cannot be explained solely by broader UK labour market conditions&#8221;.\u00a0 At the same time, we know that there are significant deficits in construction skills in Wales.\u00a0 As the data analysis document identifies,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;To meet demand, Wales needs 2,200 construction workers each year, yet the workforce is shrinking by around 300 annually. In the retrofit sector, current labour supply meets just 87% of demand.
