{"id":253,"date":"2025-11-14T06:20:51","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T06:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/?p=253"},"modified":"2025-11-13T16:56:52","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T16:56:52","slug":"age-is-a-woeful-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/age-is-a-woeful-thing\/","title":{"rendered":"Age is a woeful thing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a short post just to reflect on the fact that there will be a changing of the housing guard in the coming months.\u00a0 They can speak for themselves and I&#8217;m not going to name names (except one), but some of the people I look to, look up to, respect and admire are moving on from their current roles, either retiring or stepping back or stepping on.\u00a0 One person I think I can namecheck is my amazing colleague, Prof Pete Mackie, who is stepping on to the Institute of Global Homelessness.\u00a0 Lucky them, unlucky Cardiff (perhaps, I don&#8217;t know, but possibly, a product of the uncertainty at Cardiff at the moment).\u00a0 Pete Mackie has been such a mainstay of research and WG responses to homelessness (consider, for example, his role on the expert group of homelessness), and I regret that I never really had a chance to work with him.\u00a0 My reflection is that he is a bit of a whirlwind of activity, with which I certainly couldn&#8217;t keep up.\u00a0 And, the others leaving\/stepping back will leave a massive hole.<\/p>\n<p>That tale of woe needs to be matched with the hive of activity which is going on in Welsh housing law, policy and politics.\u00a0 I do understand that, and there are great things happening, but it is a moment to reflect both on where we are, my thanks to those people, and express a little bit of anxiety about the next gen of housing advocates, housing lawyers in Wales.\u00a0 That is such an important thing, given the ambitions of where we are and are going in Welsh housing.\u00a0 Legal education is such that, at undergrad level, it is no longer possible to teach a housing law module in a law degree.\u00a0 How can we educate the next gen in Welsh housing law and policy?\u00a0 Particularly for Welsh speakers.<\/p>\n<p>Genuine question &#8211; <em>please do get in touch if you have ideas<\/em>.\u00a0 One idea I have is to have a Welsh housing law one day conference next September (after the elections) &#8211; more on which to follow at some point.\u00a0 Another idea is to do a series of online recorded talks which can be downloaded &#8211; what do you think?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This is a short post just to reflect on the fact that there will be a changing of the housing guard in the coming months.\u00a0 They can speak for themselves [&hellip;]","protected":false},"author":7123,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[44,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-253","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-legal-education","category-uncategorised"],"jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"meta_box":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/253","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/7123"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=253"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/253\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":256,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/253\/revisions\/256"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=253"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=253"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/housing-law-wales\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=253"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
