Neurodivergent children in temporary accommodation

23 January 2026

Impact for Urban Health have just published guidance for English local authorities regarding the needs of neurodiverse children living in temporary accommodation, but the Guidance does rather more than that in discussing the journey through the homelessness application process, and how families can negotiate it.  I was really proud to have been involved in a small way with it.  Even though it is for England, and relates to English law, I hope that it might assist Welsh local authorities and especially families with neurodivergent children.  I should say that there is an excellent guide regarding Autism, published by the WG/WLGA/Public Health Wales and National Autism Team back in 2019 (which could do with being updated).

Impact for Urban Health have written:

We are pleased to publish this guidance ‘Meeting the needs of neurodivergent children living in temporary accommodation: Guidance for housing officers, legal representatives and families’.This guidance has been produced for families, legal professionals, councils and other services that work with people experiencing temporary accommodation who have neurodivergent children. It provides legal guidance and promotes policy and practice that will ensure every child’s stay in temporary accommodation is safe, healthy and as short as possible. We hope that the guidance can support housing officers through contributing to an improved understanding of the core characteristics and behaviours of neurodivergent children, particularly autistic children. We also hope that families of neurodivergent children find the guidance helpful to understand their rights under the Housing Act 1996.

Please do look at it if of use, and pass on to others who may find it useful.

Thank you (and apologies for the glut of posts this week)
