Energy shock

17 October 2025

In previous posts, I have noted how energy efficiency is a particular problem in parts of the private rented sector in Wales, the WG is committed to produce energy efficient social homes, and that energy efficiency in owner occupied housing is below standards in England.  The National Audit Office report on Energy efficiency installations under the Energy Company Obligation makes pretty sobering reading.  The obligation applies top Wales and, although it does not disaggregate its findings to Wales, given the disproportionate issue in Wales, its effects may be exaggerated here.  Actually, all round, the report makes shocking reading – from the headline stats (that 98% of homes with external wall insulation under the obligation are believed to have major issues requiring remediation; and 29% of internal walls in the same boat) to the findings of poor quality installations, suspected fraud, non-compliance with quality standards, poor workforce skills and corner-cutting.  All of this when, as we know, the majority of households living in accommodation which has poor energy efficiency tend to be vulnerable in some way (not just from the energy issues).  The whole thing is such a scandal #nuffsaid
