Rent

Rent control resource

31 July 2026

If rent control interests you, just a short note to point you to this rather impressive piece by the leading* experts on the subject, Alex Marsh and Ken Gibb (* I could be a little biased in that assessment but believe it to be a straightforward fact).  They raise a series of important bigger picture questions and their conclusion may send shudders down housing policy wonks: “… it would be unwise to ignore the challenges, uncertainties and risks inherent in pursuing this policy direction. That isn’t an argument against exploring the issues, or, indeed, against greater rent regulation. But it [is] an argument against incautious advocacy of rent control as the solution to the problem of lack of rental affordability.”  As I have noted here, the policy on rents seems to be subject potentially to a degree of slippage.  It will be interesting to see how it develops.
