The Erasmus+ Application is a\nlengthy process. First, you will initially apply to your university; upon\ngetting a nomination, you will need to apply to the host university, and then\nbegin the process of finding accommodation and filling out a multitude of forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let\u2019s begin with the\nbasics; the first application, being nominated and applying to the host\nuniversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting Permission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Before I could apply, I had to request permission and a meeting with the Head of Department. Getting permission to apply is similar to being interviewed wherein it is the Head of the Department\u2019s decision to determine if you are academically suitable to take part in the scheme. Convincing the Head of Department of your ability to bring the best to the scheme will help when they negotiate nominations with the Erasmus+ team.

I was in a unique situation wherein the Head of Philosophy happened to be my personal tutor. In the meeting, we caught up on how things were going academically and personally before I explained every reason why I should be the person selected for the Oslo placement. Since there was only one place for Norway and it was open to the other subjects in my academic school, I was advised to aim for high 2:1s in my Autumn semester modules as it would ultimately reduce down to which applicant has the better grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Your application will be\nseparated into three sections:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

General Information<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first section will ask\ngeneral information about your home institution. I had to fill in my general\nstudent details, confirmation that my application had been approved by the Head\nof Department, and information on my disability (A Placement Proforma was put\nin place so that I would not be disadvantaged at UiO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Study Abroad Choices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second section concerns\neverything about the universities you are interested in. Erasmus+ students who\nwill be going for a semester will require to take modules which total 30 ECTS\n(European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had to fill in six\npreferable modules for Norway and my second choice of Belgium. It is important\nto research courses at the host universities to ensure that they are\ninteresting personally!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personal Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like your application to university, the personal\nstatement to study abroad is the selling point of the application. The\napplication suggests a \u2018brief\nexplanation of why you want to take part in the study abroad scheme\u2019<\/em>.\nI separated my personal statement into two sections:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demonstrating Academic Enthusiasm for the Degree<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Showing that you are academically\nengaged is essential to be considered and trusted to perform well when you are\nabroad. I began my personal statement with two paragraphs on why I wanted to\nbroaden my philosophical scope by taking part in the study abroad scheme. The\nlocation was key to this since I am interested primarily in continental\nEuropean philosophy. This progressed to interest in how other faculties differ\nin teaching and noting academic accolades and lengths I\u2019ve previously gone to\nfor my interest in the degree.

\n\u2022 Interest in the subject
\n\u2022 Specific topic of interest
\n\u2022 Relevant academic achievements<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demonstrating in-depth Research into the Host Universities<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discussing the universities\nyou have applied for is optional as you can simply talk about being interested\nin the study abroad scheme in general. Since I had researched a lot and I also\nwanted to give myself the best chance possible, I dedicated a further two\nparagraphs to the Norwegian and Belgium university:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Culture and history
\n\u2022 Positive attributes of the university 
\n\u2022 Academic and personal benefits<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I made it clear that Norway\nwas my first choice but that I was equally happy if I were to get the Belgium\nplace. Entwining knowledge of the culture as well as the courses provides by\nthe institution is an excellent way to demonstrate that you have done your\nresearch, concluding it with the benefits you could receive from the scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclude the personal statement with a concise paragraph repeating why you are the best person for the place and you are all set!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting Accepted: What\u2019s Next<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It will usually take a couple\nmonths before you will receive an answer. It is a very a nerve-wracking day\nwhen people begin getting notifications of nomination. My housemate got her\nnomination before mine and I remember feeling nauseous until I finally got an\nemail confirming that all the effort had paid off and I would be the student\ngoing to UiO, Norway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After being accepted, I now\nhad to apply to UiO myself. This is the part that surprised me and many others,\nbeing nominated by the university is the first step \u2013 the host university can\nstill reject the application.

\nThe application process at UiO was simple thankfully, with the only\nrequirements being to fill out general details and upload certificates of my\ngrades from first year. It took two months before the deadline for applications\nat UiO closed so it wasn\u2019t until early May that I received the admission\nacceptance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having received my acceptance\nfrom both universities, I now have four forms to fill out before I leave:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Declaration Form 
\n\u2022 Student Grant Agreement
\n\u2022 Learning Agreement
\n\u2022 OSL Assessment (assessment in knowledge of the native language)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to technical difficulties, these took longer to complete and so, I looking into accommodation in Norway whilst I waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
