Bienvenue \u00e0 mon quatri\u00e8me blog pour<\/em> Routes into Languages. <em>Je m\u2019excuse pour le retard en publiant ce blog, mais j\u2019\u00e9tais d\u00e9bord\u00e9 pendant le mois de mai avec mes examens et l\u2019\u00e9criture de deux dissertations\u00a0! Cependant, ce blog va traiter le th\u00e8me de la diversit\u00e9 et de la diff\u00e9rence en France.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>La France, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son histoire colonialiste, a une population vraiment diverse, particuli\u00e8rement dans les grandes villes. Comme le Royaume-Uni, la France a eu un grand empire qui a touch\u00e9 des quatre coins du monde d\u00e8s les territoires du Nord Am\u00e9rique comme Qu\u00e9bec et Louisiane, aux pays africains et encore les territoires asiatiques (qui s\u2019appelaient l\u2019Indochine fran\u00e7aise), par exemple la Vietnam et le Cambodge.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Like many former colonial powerhouses, the majority of France\u2019s migrant population consists of people from the former colonies. Since France\u2019s period of \u2018decolonisation\u2019 many people emigrated from <em>fran\u00e7afrique<\/em> to France. As the name suggests, <em>fran\u00e7afrique<\/em> refers to African countries that were once colonised by France, such as <em>la C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire<\/em>, <em>le S\u00e9n\u00e9gal<\/em> and <em>les pays Maghrebs<\/em> (<em>la Tunisie, le Maroc et l\u2019Algerie<\/em>).<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 479px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/0\/09\/131Etendue_de_l%27Empire_Fran%C3%A7ais.png\/1280px-131Etendue_de_l%27Empire_Fran%C3%A7ais.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/0\/09\/131Etendue_de_l%27Empire_Fran%C3%A7ais.png\/1280px-131Etendue_de_l%27Empire_Fran%C3%A7ais.png\" alt=\"Global map of French colonial empire\" width=\"479\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map depicting the first (green) and second (blue) French colonial empires<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It is actually illegal for the French government to collect data on ethnicity and race so there is no exact figure for the number of French citizens with their origins in\u00a0<em>fran\u00e7afrique. <\/em>Despite this, it is estimated that 5-8% of the French population is black, with 4 out of 5 black French people tracing their roots back to\u00a0<em>fran\u00e7afrique.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Il n\u2019y a aucun endroit o\u00f9 la diversit\u00e9 des citoyens de la France est autant apparente que son \u00e9quipe de foot. L\u2019ambassadeur fran\u00e7ais a r\u00e9pondu en lui \u00e9criant une lettre qui a expliqu\u00e9 que les joueurs sont tous consid\u00e9r\u00e9s comme citoyens fran\u00e7ais, malgr\u00e9 leur origine, ethnicit\u00e9 ou religion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The reaction of the French ambassador comes in the wake of a rise in extremist, racist views in France. This rise is evidenced by the far-right party <em>Front National<\/em>\u2019s, now known as the <em>Rassemblement National<\/em>, Presidential candidate, Marine Le Pen, gaining nearly 34% of the votes in the 2017 Presidential Election. It was Marine Le Pen\u2019s father who, after France\u2019s last World Cup victory in 1998 with a team just as ethnically and religiously diverse as this year\u2019s champions, labelled the team as \u2018unworthy\u2019 representatives of France.<\/p>\n<p><em>La France a une approche un peu \u2018diff\u00e9rente\u2019 vers l\u2019ethnicit\u00e9. Comme l\u2019ambassadeur a dit dans sa lettre, on ne trouve pas les \u2018identit\u00e9s \u00e0 trait d\u2019union\u2019 <\/em>(hyphenated identities)<em> en France, comme <\/em>\u2018african-american\u2019<em> par exemple.
