Salamanca has had a large impact on the creation of modern Spanish culture and identity. It is located in Spain\u2019s largest autonomous community, Castilla y Le\u00f3n, where modern day espa<\/em>\u00f1<\/em>ol, <\/em>which is known as castellano <\/em>in Spain, comes from.\u00a0 As a result the city is extremely popular with students wanting to learn Spanish. Therefore private Spanish language academies form an integral part of the local economy and you can often see children from northern Europe school trips in the city.<\/p>\n

Salamanca es una ciudad de gran influencia cat\u00f3lica cual podemos ver en el folklore salamantino. Seg\u00fan la leyenda el Diablo en persona impart\u00eda clases de magia negra en la Cueva de Salamanca a grupos de siete estudiantes durante siete a\u00f1os.\u00a0Al concluir los estudios uno de los estudiantes hab\u00eda de quedar al servicio del demonio como pago a sus ense\u00f1anzas. El Marqu\u00e9s de Villena (un miembro de la nobleza local) fue uno de los elegidos. Consigui\u00f3 huir con vida, aunque en su huida perdi\u00f3 la sombra, lo que mostraba todos les encontraban que \u00e9l fue un seguidor de Satan\u00e1s.<\/p>\n

Salamanca also heavily influences Spanish literature and is often regarded as one of Spain\u2019s most romantic cities due to its picturesque Romance style architecture. The famous novel La <\/em>Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea<\/em>, popularly known as La Celestina,<\/em> has influenced this stereotype. The story is similar to that of Romeo and Juliet, where a boy from a local noble family falls in love with a peasant girl, but is forbidden from marrying her by his parents which leads to her suicide. The city\u2019s botanical garden is named after the lovers and young couples in the city put candados de amor <\/em>(\u2018love locks\u2019) on the well in the hope of maintaining ever-lasting love.<\/p>\n

El Lunes de Aguas<\/em> is perhaps the strangest local holiday. Celebrated only in Salamanca Province on the first Monday after Easter, the celebration of el Lunes de Aguas<\/em> dates back to the 16th<\/sup> century, when King Felipe II believed that the city had succumbed to too much vice. In response he banished local prostitutes during la Cuarema<\/em> (Lent), to the other side of the R\u00edo Tormes, which divides the barrio hist<\/em>\u00f3rico<\/em> (historic neighbourhood) of Salamanca from the villages of Salamanca Province. The city\u2019s priest would bring the prostitutes back by boat on the first Monday after Easter (the end of Lent) which was greeted with raucous celebration by the city\u2019s men. The tradition stuck and now every year young Salamancans, known locally as salamantinos<\/em> or charros, <\/em>go to the riverbank and celebrate by holding a botell<\/em>\u00f3n <\/em>(a huge gathering of young people drinking and celebrating which is popular throughout Spain)\u00a0and eating local food, in particular hornazo.<\/em><\/p>\n

Hay una gran variedad de hornazo <\/em>en Espa\u00f1a pero en general, tienen en com\u00fan que se hacen en el horno (de ah\u00ed su nombre) con masa de pan engrasada. Sin embargo el hornazo salamantino <\/em>habitualmente tiene una rellena de chorizo, jam\u00f3n, lomo gracias al gran tama\u00f1o de la industria c\u00e1rnica en la regi\u00f3n. Los salamantinos lo compran de su panader\u00eda local y lo comen con su familia o con amigos a la orilla ribera.\u00a0 \u00a1Es una comida riqu\u00edsima y yo recomendar\u00eda que la pruebes si visitas Castilla y Le\u00f3n en el futuro!<\/p>\n
