\u00a1Hola a todos! \u00bfQu\u00e9 tal? The theme of this month\u2019s blog is Spanish festivals and celebrations, and in this blog post I\u2019m going to talk about the two that I\u2019ve experienced since I\u2019ve arrived in Spain.<\/p>\n

Cuando llegu\u00e9 a Salamanca no hab\u00eda sido a un festival espa\u00f1ol, pero ahora he sido a dos festivales en otras ciudades. El primero fue el Carnaval del Toro en Ciudad Rodrigo. El nombre del festival viene del punto culminante de la celebraci\u00f3n, cuando hombres locales corren con 50 o m\u00e1s toros en la R\u00faa Mayor del pueblo. Es una tradici\u00f3n peligros\u00edsima y desafortunadamente heridas graves ocurren cada a\u00f1o.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Ciudad Rodrigo is a small town in the autonomous community of Castilla y Le\u00f3n, and is about an hour\u2019s drive east from Salamanca, near the border with Portugal. Every year it hosts big carnival celebrations in February, where young people from around the region have a huge botell<\/em>\u00f3<\/em>n<\/em> throughout the day. Although carnival celebrations are most commonly associated with Brazil, it\u2019s also a popular tradition in Spain and Portugal, with el Carnaval del Toro<\/em> being the third most known carnival celebration in Spain after those in Tenerife and C\u00e1diz.<\/p>\n

Los disfraces se forman una parte integral de las celebraciones. Normalmente cada pueblo en la regi\u00f3n festeja el carnaval y los mejores disfraces ganan premios.\u00a0 Cuando mis compa\u00f1eras de piso y yo fuimos al Carnaval del Toro nos disfrazamos de sevillanos. Muchos disfraces se r\u00eden de la cultura popular espa\u00f1ol, por ejemplo algunas personas se disfrazaron de churros u otra comida como hamburguesas o pulpo. Fue una experiencia inolvidable y \u00a1yo la recomendar\u00eda a alguien que pase el a\u00f1o en el extranjero en Castilla y Le\u00f3n!<\/p>\n

The second festival I have been to in Spain was Las Falles<\/em> in Valencia. There I met up with my best friend that I lived with whilst studying in Lisbon last semester. Las Falles<\/em> is the celebration of the death of St. Joseph. The name refers to both the festival and the sculptures which are made and then eventually burnt on the final Monday of festivities. Each neighbourhood in the city has a casal faller<\/em>, a group of people that works on building their falles<\/em> throughout the year and raising money for the project. Many of the falles<\/em> are satirical, and make fun of celebrities or political figures, for example King Felipe of Spain or Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Las Fallas es una gran celebraci\u00f3n que tal vez sea m\u00e1s conocida por los fuegos artificiales impresionantes cada noche. No obstante, sobre todo es una celebraci\u00f3n de todo valenciano, y muchas personas de la comunidad aut\u00f3noma vienen a la ciudad para que puedan celebrar con familia y amigos. Cuando est\u00e1n en marcha la gente lleva puesta el traje tradicional de la Comunidad Valenciana. El traje masculino fallero es formado por pantal\u00f3n, chaquetilla corta y una camisa blanca, mientras el traje femenino es formado por vestidos largos normalmente en colores tradicionales (amarilla, rojo, azul y blanco) con mucha joyer\u00eda. No obstante las celebraciones, especialmente durante la noche, a menudo pueden ser peligrosas porque algunos j\u00f3venes suelen de lanzar los fuegos artificiales a uno a otro en la calle que puede resultar en quemaduras graves.<\/p>\n

During Las Falles<\/em> there are many fiestas en la calle<\/em>, each one playing a different type of music. It\u2019s possible to hear reggaet<\/em>\u00f3<\/em>n<\/em>, techno and even English pop music at the events. The streets were also full of churro stalls which sold every type of churro imaginable, with the flavours of churros rellenos<\/em> available including Nutella and dulce de leche<\/em> (caramel). The atmosphere of the city was amazing throughout the three days I was there and seeing the celebrations in person was an unforgettable experience.<\/p>\n
