- It\u2019s located next to the Sierra Nevada, I literally can see it on the walk from uni!! And 30 minutes to the beach\u2026 skiing and beach trip in one day anyone?<\/li>\n
- My two favourite neighbourhoods are Sacromonte and Albacin, the views that they offer and the atmosphere on the streets is just so enchanting with gypsies singing and a view of the Alhambra. Also in Sacromonte, many people live in\u00a0cuevas\u00a0<\/strong>(some sort of cave that has been transformed into a house inside, I spoke to one of the owners who told me that there might be no wifi, but they’re naturally very warm homes.<\/p>\n

Now onto el medioambiente<\/em><\/strong> \u2026<\/p>\n
Agua<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Before arriving I never knew that the water in Granada would be special\u2026 You know how when you go on holidays, your parents tell you \u201cdon\u2019t drink from the tap\u201d. Well, in Granada, the locals say that the la agua del grifo es mejor que la agua embotellada <\/em><\/strong>(tap water is better than bottled water).<\/p>\n
Granada\u2019s water is very much present everywhere in the city such as fountains, ponds and rivers. There are even stories, and songs based on Granada\u2019s water.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\nThe Alhambra is also a place where you can see that the presence of the water is very much essential, it gives a fresh atmosphere to the castle.<\/p>\n
According to the locals, their water is so good because it come straight from the mountains, springs or mountain reservoirs. I must admit that it\u2019s always nice and fresh from the tap.\u00a0There is a real sense of pride attached to their water.<\/p>\n
Transporte publico –\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Public transport<\/p>\n
In terms of transport, and reducing both emission and consumption. Granada is encouraging people to get out of cars and onto bicycles and transport, therefore at the end of this month they\u2019re inaugurating Granada\u2019s very first tram line \u201cGranada Metro\u201d <\/em><\/strong>which will connect Granada with its surrounding villages and will cost about 0,97 cents per trip. I\u2019m personally quite excited to be able to see more of the region for such low price!<\/p>\n
This\u00a0sensibilizaci\u00f3n medioambiental\u00a0<\/strong>(environmental awareness) is also seen on the streets of Granada, parks and schools. As you can see in the pictures below:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\nFor example, my univesity here has a programme called eco-campus where they offer : guided tours to natural reservoirs, debates, conference and outdoor workshops to raise environmental awareness!<\/p>\n

Like most cities, Granada is persistent\u00a0with its environmental awareness as there are a few problemas medioambientales\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(environmental problems) such as air pollution seems, I recently saw a headline that stated that Granada is one of the areas with the highest levels of air pollution!

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
As you can see the term for air pollution in Spanish is : \u201ccontaminaci\u00f3n del aire\u201d<\/strong> and you can also use \u201ccontaminaci\u00f3n atmosferica\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
This is one of the reasons why the junta of Andalucia <\/em><\/strong>regional government of Andalusia has introduced Granada Metro <\/em><\/strong>\u201cpara que el coche se quede aparcado\u201d. <\/strong>\u00a0(so that the cars stay parked)\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
Can you think of any other measures the council could introduce to reduce air pollution in Granada?\/ \u00bfPod\u00e9is pensar en otras medidas que la junta debria inroducir para reducir la contaminaci\u00f3n atmosf\u00e9rica?<\/strong><\/u><\/em><\/p>\n
Here are a few suggestions in Spanish \u2013 try and work out their meaning:<\/p>\n
- \n
- Anda en bicicleta<\/strong>, camina, usa el transporte p\u00fablico y comparte tu auto con compa\u00f1eros de escuela y trabajo.<\/li>\n
- Evita el consumo de tabaco.<\/strong><\/li>\n
- Cuida los bosques,<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>no hagas cosas que puedan provocar incendios ni destruir las zonas verdes de la ciudad.<\/li>\n
- No compres art\u00edculos desechables<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>y pl\u00e1sticos que no son biodegradables<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
<\/p>\n
\u00a1Naranjas, mandarinas y limones por todas partes!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
One of my daily sights on the walk to and from uni is an orange, lemon, or\u00a0 olive tree, these trees and many other make Granada look so green and beautiful! For me these have become a sign of “I\u2019m defnitely in Spain”!!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\nOlive tree – un olivo<\/strong>, orange tree- un naranjero<\/strong>, lemon tree- un limonero<\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Eco Turismo<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
Recently, I was looking into volunteering opportunities in Granada and came across this form of eco-tourism where people who have houses and bungalows in the rural areas of the region of Andalucia (where Granada is situated) offer accommodation and food in exchange for help with their gardening,\u00a0 farming and collecting fruits and vegetables.\u00a0 They offer stays from 1-4weeks, which I think is great, because not only you get a break from the city life, also you\u2019re helping the community whilst getting to discover another part of the region, and needless to say that it\u2019s an opportunity to expand your medioambiente vocabulary. I\u2019m definitely going to book myself a week in one of these bungalows as soon as the weather gets a bit warmer! One of the places that offers this type of eco-tourism is a village called Alpurajas which is situated on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada.<\/p>\n
Sierra Nevada <\/em><\/strong>As I said earlier, Granada is home to one of the biggest natural parks in Spain \u2013 Sierra Nevada and it has two of the highest peaks in the Iberian Peninsula! I\u2019m lucky enough to say that I only have to walk 10 minutes from my house to see the mountains! Not only does great water come from these mountains. But, this year Sierra Nevada is also holding the\u00a0Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships which is predicted to generate more than\u00a0\u20ac16 million and 1,500 jobs!
