24 October 2025
Name: Hollie Aston
School, Degree Programme: Business School-Economics, Second Year
Host destination: Bali
Tell us about your global opportunity—where did you go, and what did you do?
This summer I took part in the Global Team Internship Programme in Bali with Think Pacific. I spent four weeks working with a team of students on projects for local NGOs and social enterprises, coming up with ideas to tackle real challenges in Southeast Asia and presenting our proposals at the end of each week.
What surprised you the most about your host country/programme/time abroad?
What surprised me the most was how quickly everyone became close and how comfortable we felt living with our homestay families. They welcomed us into their lifestyle and made Bali feel like a second home. It was such a special way to experience the culture and learn about local traditions.
What is the one thing you miss about your time abroad?
I really miss the Grab bikes, they were so cheap and such a fun way to get around!! I also miss exploring new places and the hot weather.
What’s something you’re passionate about outside of your studies?
Travel, rowing, music
What’s your favourite place on campus/in Cardiff?
Roath Park is so pretty when it’s not raining!!
If you could live anywhere in the world for a year (a dream destination), where would it be—and why?
I’d love to live in Australia for a year because of the warm weather and surfing. I also just really love the accent!!
What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
I do rowing
Describe your global experience in three words:
Fun, Inspiring, Rewarding
What advice would you give to students considering a global opportunity?
My advice would be to make the most of every opportunity and push yourself out of your comfort zone. You’ll make friends for life, and gain experiences you’ll never forget. It was honestly one of the best things I’ve ever done.
