Name: Anoushka Parylo
School, Degree Programme: School of Psychology, Undergraduate Psychology with professional placement, year 4
Host destination: Sydney, Australia
Tell us about your global opportunity—where did you go, and what did you do?
I went to Sydney, Australia for my placement year. I was a research assistant at University of Technology, Sydney . My role involved me helping with data collection, organisation and analysis as well as various administrative activities.
What surprised you the most about your host country/programme/time abroad?
I think what surprised me most about Australia was how similar it is to the UK, but everything is slightly different. It sort of feels like a simulation. I was also surprised by how expensive veg is.
What is the one thing you miss about your time abroad?
I miss the sunshine, the beach and the affordable food! I also miss the outlook Australians have on work. They understand the value in balance; leave work at work and nurture hobbies outside of work.
What’s something you’re passionate about outside of your studies?
Travel, fashion, music, climbing
What’s your favourite place on campus/in Cardiff?
Pontcanna or paradise gardens
If you could live anywhere in the world for a year (a dream destination), where would it be—and why?
I would do 6 months in Barcelona and 6 months in Japan. I think Barcelona is a very vibrant and lively city, and I love the meals that last all evening. I would love to live in Japan because I feel it is a very peaceful place with great food and great matcha. I am really interested in Japanese art and culture and would love to be immersed in it.
What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
I have a black belt in karate
Describe your global experience in three words:
Challenging, enriching, motivating
What advice would you give to students considering a global opportunity?
Any chance to gain experience while travelling the world will be a great experience. It boosts confidence, independence and broadens your view of the world. I think it is particularly beneficial for people who are anxious or concerned about their future. It helps you to gain perspective of the multitude of ways your life can go, and how many ways there are to live your life.
