Meet the ambassador – Daniel – ENCAP, Ireland

13 October 2025

Name: Daniel Estell
School, Degree Programme: ENCAP, English Language and Linguistics, Year 3
Host destination: University College Dublin, Ireland

Tell us about your global opportunity—where did you go, and what did you do?
My name’s Daniel, I’m a BA English Language and Linguistics student, and I spent a semester abroad at University College Dublin in Ireland. I was pleased that Cardiff allowed me to transfer credits from UCD, meaning that I’ll still be able to graduate with my friends next year.

During my time at UCD, I met people from across the world (from literally every continent!), and I am forever grateful that I had the opportunity to experience living in a different country. I also enjoyed exploring Ireland and experiencing Irish culture.

What surprised you the most about your host country/programme/time abroad?
I was pleasantly surprised by how different Irish and UK cultures are. Despite sharing an open border with the UK, Ireland has a really unique feel and I loved exploring local towns and cities during my time at UCD.

What is the one thing you miss about your time abroad?
I miss living in a different country with a large cohort of people from across the world. I loved the community feel on the UCD campus, and the university was brilliant at organising a whole host of events for incoming international students, which made it really easy to get to know people.

Also, Guinness definitely tastes different (better!) in Ireland 🙂

What’s something you’re passionate about outside of your studies?
I love cooking and baking – my go-to bake is either cookies or millionaire’s shortbread!

What’s your favourite place on campus/in Cardiff?
Roath Park, Pontcanna Market, and Alexandra Gardens

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year (a dream destination), where would it be—and why?
I’d choose Canada – I’ve never been, but I’d love to experience both a summer and a winter season in the country.

What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
I am profoundly deaf, I failed my hearing tests at birth so I was implanted with Cochlear Implants which nearly replace traditional hearing.

Describe your global experience in three words:
Insightful, fun, immersive

What advice would you give to students considering a global opportunity?
Go for it! I felt well-supported by both UCD and Cardiff during my time abroad, and I felt that I had people to fall back on if I had any issues or concerns.
