What motivated you to take up a semester abroad in Cardiff?

I had heard great things about Cardiff University from peers that had completed a semester or year abroad here in the past! It seemed super welcoming with a great sense of community and support.

How was the process of applying for this programme?

It was not difficult! I just needed to think about the potential experience and how it would benefit me both academically and culturally. It was tough to decide what to write but I found being honest about my passions and wants for Cardiff were made it easier!

What is the one thing you wish you’d known before you left?

I wish I knew that it’s going to feel weird at first! Especially as a student coming with a non-UK accent means people will kind of double take your presence! But often this is met with interest towards where you’re from and why you’re in Cardiff! Honestly a great way to make friends!

What was your biggest challenge?

I struggled more so with being further away from my family and friends at home! But I found solace in how excited they were for me and how they always wanted to hear about my adventures and experiences!

What are your highlights from your time in Cardiff so far?

I am really enjoying my modules they are very interesting and the work load is balanced! I have also been loving the Student Union’s Give it a Go trips as a way to explore more of the UK through financially accessible day trips!

Can you tell us about the learning and teaching environment at Cardiff University?

The professors here have been so kind and are always supportive that I may be lacking in some of the cultural background of the classes. They encourage me to ask for support when needed and to share my own Canadian perspective which helps me make connections with my prior knowledge!

Can you tell us about student life on campus, including the Student’s Union? Have you got involved in any clubs or societies?

I have gotten involved with the Taylor Swift Society! It has been a great way to meet people and just have fun! They put on a number of sober and non sober events to suit everyone’s interests which helps in meeting an array of people!

What would you say to students who are unsure about coming to study at Cardiff University?

The environment here is so welcoming! I love meeting people in my classes and feel comfortable speaking up a conversation with pretty much anyone!

What can you tell us about being in Wales and the Welsh culture?

I have really enjoyed the culture people are very kind and welcoming always saying hello or giving a smile when you meet them on the street. As a student from small town rural Ontario, it honestly feels a lot like home in terms of sense of community!

Can you sum up your experience in one sentence?

My experience so far has been truly unforgettable and something I can tell I will cherish throughout my life.
