“Interoperability” – making systems work together

7 August 2015

We all know how much work goes into pulling an RCUK application together… and then you have to put it into the electronic application system! The range of systems which ‘support’ the development of research are recognised as time-consuming and unwieldy, so thankfully a joint project between JISC and RCUK is looking at how systems can work together and (hopefully) make our lives easier.

A report has recently been made available via RCUK, which highlights the areas which should be prioritised, ORCID being the top priority. The report also looks at ISNI’s (organisational unique reference numbers), linking systems to support Open Access obligations and developments with the Gateway to Research.

With our own system – which is built on the Converis package¬†– starting to build it’s capacity to better support the research development of the University, joined up systems drive research development may not be too far away. Are we ready? What will we need to develop our support structures? And how will we cope with the transition period?
