H2020 – reflections from the Science Business Network, Brussels

The March 2015 WHEB (Welsh Higher Education Brussels) Newsletter included a review of a meeting of the Science Business network, where they discussed experiences of H2020 so far.

Reflections included:

  • The increase in volume of applications combined with falling success rates has led to man-hours and resources on unsuccessful applications to an estimated value of 3 billion euro. As such, Universities will need to consider more effective management and support of applications.
  • Cuts to the research budgets were defended as enabling “finance for relatively high-risk proposals which would otherwise find it difficult to raise funds.” It was also noted that cuts were in the context of an almost 40% raise in funding since 2007-2013.
  • Turnaround time on applications has fallen from 330 days to 207 days, suggesting administration has become more efficient.
  • Success rates of the European Research Council have increased slightly from 11.9% to 12.8%. So far 3,765 awards have been made translating to around 6.6 billion euros.
