Europe Day Quiz, 9 May 2017

The tenth Europe Day Quiz took place on Tuesday 9 May at the Cardiff EDC. Ten teams took part, composed of students, academic and administrative staff from Cardiff University, and members of the local community, including a team from the Cardiff-Stuttgart Association.

The questions covered the themes of geography, people and culture, cuisine and sport, and European politics. Examples included:

• What name is given to the Bay formed by Spain’s northern coast and France’s western coast?
• Which European country has collected the highest number of Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film?
• From which city is this year’s Tour de France set to depart in cycling?
• Malta currently holds the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Name the three Member States next in line.

In addition, we had a picture round – this year we showed ten famous brand logos such as H&M, Wooga and Chanel – and asked in which European capital city is each company based?

For the fourth time Frederico Rocha, Deputy Director of the Cardiff EDC, compiled the quiz and acted as Question Master. Ceri Thomas compiled the Picture Round. Together they succeeded in achieving the right balance of enjoyment and challenge.

After a hard fought contest, including a tie break question between two teams who both scored 47 points (out of a possible 68 maximum), the winning team was announced – Cecile Boutrou, Charlotte Lisle and Thomas Prosser (all from Cardiff Business School).  Each team member received a Europe Direct goody bag and a bottle of wine.

Thanks to Frederico for his hard work, good humour and skilled question presenting, Ceri Thomas for compiling the picture round, keeping tally of the scores and taking some photographs and to our full time interns Camille Rey, Giulia Marogna and Filippo Bonucci, plus part time interns Jiacheng Yang and Ana Alexandrescu, for helping us set up the Centre for the quiz and for various tasks throughout the evening to make everything go smoothly.

Thanks also to the European Commission Representation in Cardiff for supporting our event and to Capital Cuisine for providing a fine buffet with friendly and efficient service.
