I perform a dual role both overseeing Erasmus/Year in Europe exchanges and the new MEng International degrees for Engineering.
The Year in Europe schemes have been around for a number of years, allowing MEng students to spend a year at a university in Spain, France or Germany between their 3rd and 4th years at Cardiff. However, with the new International MEng degrees, we can now extend the opportunity of study abroad to those students who do not have proficiency in another language.
The new MEng International degrees allow students to spend the Autumn of their 3rd year studying at one of an increasing number of institutions where the language of tuition is English, selecting a number of modules that mirror those that would be studied during the same period at Cardiff. In this way, students can benefit from the enormous value of experiencing a different culture and country, something that our Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Colin Riodan is very keen that as many of our students can take advantage of as possible.
Our first students will take this opportunity in the 2015/16 academic year, studying at one of a large range of possible partner institutions or one of a huge number of GEC institutions in countries such as USA, Canada, or Hong Kong.
Alternatively, the Global Opportunities Centre can help students to find summer placements abroad either at academic institutions or industry, which will allow any students on any degree programme the opportunity to work or study abroad.
If you are in the early stages of your study, and would like to know more about any of these opportunities to extend your horizons, please get in touch with either myself or one of the discipline international mobility officers: Dr Bettina Bockelmann-Evans (ACE), Dr Carlos Ugalde Loo (EEE) or Dr Samuel Bigot (MMM).
