{"id":527,"date":"2025-02-21T12:12:24","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T12:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/creative-economy\/?p=527"},"modified":"2025-02-21T12:12:24","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T12:12:24","slug":"cardiff-university-researchers-uncover-new-way-of-mapping-creative-ecosystem-in-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/creative-economy\/cardiff-university-researchers-uncover-new-way-of-mapping-creative-ecosystem-in-wales\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardiff University Researchers uncover new way of mapping  creative ecosystem in Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Researchers from Cardiff University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/creative-economy\">Centre for the Creative Economy<\/a> have today unveiled a brand-new way of uncovering the breadth of Wales\u2019 vast network of creative businesses and freelancers. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/creativeatlas.cymru\/\">Creative Economy Atlas Cymru<\/a> has been developed by the Centre for the Creative Economy at Cardiff University. It follows an earlier prototype created in 2020 as part of the \u00a34m AHRC-funded research and development programme <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Clwstwr <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">(2018-2023). In 2023-2024, the Centre for Creative Economy updated and expanded the Atlas with support from Creative Wales and the Media Cymru programme.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Using data pooled from multiple sources, the \u201cCreative Atlas\u201d provides a unique, geographical picture of the Welsh creative ecosystem. The interactive map allows visitors to explore nine different creative sectors,\u00a0 nine types of creative spaces, as well as mapping other kinds of creative networks across Wales. Visitors can zoom in to look at particular regions and postcodes, or zoom out to get a sense of where creative activity is clustered across Wales. Centre for Creative Economy researchers say the new Atlas is the most comprehensive of its kind in the UK, helping to break up data silos across the Welsh creative ecosystem and provides a complete and accurate picture of the creative industries across Wales.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Creative Atlas will continue to evolve, incorprating new data as it emerges. It\u2019s online home is managed by the Centre for Creative Economy, with support from 4Global.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Professor Marlen Komorow<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">ki, <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Senior Research Fellow for the Media Cymru<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> said:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the Centre for the Creative Economy, we\u2019ve found that the creative industries have become a true growth engine for Wales, yet this is still largely underappreciated due to the lack of accessible data<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is so much innovation, talent, and activity happening across the creative industries in Wales, but these incredible stories often remain untold. The Creative Atlas is our response to this challenge\u2014a single, accessible platform to break down data silos, showcase the amazing work being done, and provide practical tools for the sector, from finding business spaces to accessing training opportunities or exploring inspiring projects.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The new Creative Atlas was part funded by Welsh Government.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Joedi Langley, Interim Head of Creative Wales, said:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It\u2019s fantastic to see the launch of the Creative Atlas &#8211; a collection of vital insights that will serve as a hub of essential information to explore.
