{"id":82,"date":"2014-01-15T02:19:44","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T02:19:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/?p=82"},"modified":"2014-02-02T17:14:57","modified_gmt":"2014-02-02T17:14:57","slug":"taking-a-look-inside-a-pair-of-slippers-with-anna-oneill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/taking-a-look-inside-a-pair-of-slippers-with-anna-oneill\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking A Look Inside A Pair of Slippers with Anna O&#8217;Neill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most exciting things about being a conservator is discovering information hidden within an object.\u00a0 Sometimes, this can be quite literally <i>inside<\/i> an artefact, and for this there is no better tool than an x-radiograph. \u00a0Conservators can use x-radiography to determine if there is armature within a sculpture, or metal within a lump of corrosion, among other things.\u00a0 Recently, I used x-radiography to examine the construction of a pair of ornamental slippers from Cyfarthfa Castle.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_83\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/228\/2014\/01\/SLIPPERS-LIKELY-INDIAN-C.-LATE-19TH-CENTURY..jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-83 \" alt=\"Slippers, Likely Indian, C. Late 19th-Century\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/228\/2014\/01\/SLIPPERS-LIKELY-INDIAN-C.-LATE-19TH-CENTURY.-300x222.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/228\/2014\/01\/SLIPPERS-LIKELY-INDIAN-C.-LATE-19TH-CENTURY.-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/228\/2014\/01\/SLIPPERS-LIKELY-INDIAN-C.-LATE-19TH-CENTURY.-624x462.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/228\/2014\/01\/SLIPPERS-LIKELY-INDIAN-C.-LATE-19TH-CENTURY..jpg 869w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-83\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Slippers, likely Indian, circa Late 19th-Century<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>X-rays<\/b> are the beams of energy that are emitted by the machine.\u00a0 As they pass through the object, x-rays are absorbed by the material and lose energy.\u00a0 Higher density materials absorb more energy, so that fewer x-rays reach the film\u2014these show up as white areas.\u00a0 Lower-density materials allow the beams to pass through with little energy lost and appear darker on the film.\u00a0 The resulting image on the film is an <b>x-radiograph<\/b>, while the practice of creating images this way is called <b>x-radiography<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>There are two factors that affect the final image: the <b>energy<\/b> (measured in kilovolts, kV) of the x-ray beam, and the <b>time<\/b> (in seconds) of the exposure.\u00a0 Lower kV but higher exposure time can give greater detail if you&#8217;re patient. Higher kV will remove detail from lower density elements but gives a clearer image of higher density materials.<\/p>\n<p>The slippers are probably from late 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century India, and are highly decorated with metal and glass beads.\u00a0 My purpose for x-raying them was two-fold: I wanted to see if there were any construction issues that I would need to address, and I wanted to get a better picture of the decorative pattern, which had been obscured by tarnish and time.<\/p>\n<p>In order to see the structure of the slippers, I needed to adjust the settings of the x-ray machine to be sensitive to low-density materials.\u00a0 Using low energy and a longer exposure time produced an image of the organic elements, showing hidden details of the shoe\u2019s construction.\u00a0 The body of the shoe is clear, as the lower-energy beams were better absorbed by the organic materials.\u00a0 The long strips of leather running down the sole provide flexibility and support, while the heel is made of more strips nailed on crosswise.\u00a0 Interestingly, more nails show up on the x-radiograph than are visible on the bottom of the shoe\u2014the extra nails are probably hidden under the velvet insole.\u00a0 I was also pleased to see that the stitching along the edges of the sole was visible in the image.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/228\/2014\/01\/1598168_10151904950048316_1928620442_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-84 \" alt=\"(Left) X-Radiograph of Left Slipper, Taken at 90kV for 30 Sec., Showing Pattern of Metallic Decorations.
