{"id":1351,"date":"2020-01-03T15:44:31","date_gmt":"2020-01-03T15:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/?p=1351"},"modified":"2020-01-03T15:44:38","modified_gmt":"2020-01-03T15:44:38","slug":"x-rays-galore-blackfriary-metal-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/x-rays-galore-blackfriary-metal-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"X-Rays Galore: Blackfriary Metal Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following excavations from 2010-2018, the\nBlackfriary metal finds travelled from Trim, Ireland to Cardiff University in\nJanuary 2019 for conservation. I was assigned the objects at the beginning of this\nterm and was tasked with their preliminary understanding. I will eventually\ndevise a treatment plan for these objects. For those that do not know much\nabout the Blackfriary site, have a look here: <a href=\"http:\/\/bafs.ie\/\">http:\/\/bafs.ie\/<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I received three\nboxes containing over 800 objects on my first day of class in September. The\nfinds consist mostly of iron and copper alloy objects, but there are some outliers\nsuch as silver and lead as well. The first, and only, step to fully understand\nthese finds is to x-ray them to see details the corrosion may be obscuring.\nLuckily, most of the iron is not so badly corroded that they are unidentifiable\u2014spoiler\nalert, there are a lot of nails! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the\nBlackfriary dig is overseen by the National Museum of Ireland (NMI), the processing\nof these objects must adhere to the NMI standards, which includes x-raying <strong>all<\/strong>\nthe metal finds. For more information on the practice of x-radiography at\nCardiff University see here: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/2016\/11\/23\/looking-beneath-the-layers\/\">https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/2016\/11\/23\/looking-beneath-the-layers\/<\/a>.\nI x-rayed the following objects at 90 KV for two to three minutes because metal\nrequires higher KV to penetrate the material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below, are\nphotographs of five objects in their current condition along with their x-rays.\nDetails of the objects and x-radiography results will be discussed, but treatments\nwill not, as I have just begun to understand these finds. Lead is a very dense metal and the x-rays cannot penetrate it, which is why the find shows up fully white (it\u2019s good to know the lead protection we wear when getting x-rays at the doctor\/dentist actually works!). At first, I thought the bulbous\nmass around the point was all corrosion, but after x-raying I could clearly see\nthere is a metal component that encircles the shaft of the nail. This coin is made of copper or a copper alloy, since it has\noxidized to a distinctive green color. This corrosion is relatively stable and\nknown as a patina layer. I was quite surprised to see the x-ray since the coin\nappears in decent condition, but the x-ray shows a porous looking structure. My\ninitial thought as to why this could be is that the copper is preferentially\ncorroding to whatever metal it has been alloyed with, which is leaving behind a\nporous structure. The\nrivets are the thicker portion of the rings. Archaeological iron mail can often\ncorrode into a solid chunk where only the outlines of some rings can be seen,\nso this relatively flexible fragment is a rare find (Wijnhoven 2015). This piece is so disjointed that I cannot\ndiscern what its original function may have been. It could have been part of a\nhood, mantle, or coat, but with only 15 rings, I cannot tell (Wijnhoven 2015). Perhaps someone more experienced in\nmail design and use could conclude more from this piece, but I will have to\nresearch quite a bit more to fully understand this interesting find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>1002:29: Arc-shaped fragment; thin, convex groove equidistant from rim. My lecturer, Phil Parkes, thought it may be pewter and to x-ray it to see what that may reveal. From the x-ray (90 KV, 3 min), I can tell it is not ceramic, but metal and possibly pewter. This fragment is only 0.27 cm thick but shows as a dense material in the x-ray. Historically, pewter was an alloy made of a majority of tin and usually contained small amounts of copper, antimony, or bismuth, and sometimes lead, which could be why the x-ray shows this thin fragment as so dense (The Pewter Society). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/228\/2020\/01\/arc-3e.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1366\" width=\"341\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/228\/2020\/01\/arc-3e.jpg 681w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/conservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/228\/2020\/01\/arc-3e-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">365 objects have\nbeen x-rayed so far, which is just under half of the finds. Once all the\nobjects have been x-rayed, I will determine which finds should be treated\u2014in\nconsultation with the Blackfriary staff\u2014and devise a treatment plan.
