In Defence of Collections Part 6: The Role of Museum Collections- A Summary

8 June 2022

The museums sector is committed to education, a commitment we saw renewed at ICOM. Commitment to education means a commitment to people and society, and therefore also to collections. The public recognise collections’ value as an educational resource and their ability to foster understanding relationships between people on opposite sides of the globe. Their use need not be a purely academic pursuit, and British museums cannot pretend to be interested in real social change, the goal of education, without addressing the fact that it continues to be considered as such in their future practice. (Museums Association 2016, p.14). Collections, therefore, are and must remain at the heart of everything the museum does.
