{"id":556,"date":"2019-03-21T15:26:12","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T15:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/clcrseminars\/?page_id=556"},"modified":"2019-03-21T15:27:42","modified_gmt":"2019-03-21T15:27:42","slug":"3-april-2019","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/clcrseminars\/3-april-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"3 April 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span><i><strong>Listening\u00a0to\u00a0crime: working\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0forensic\u00a0speech\u00a0analyst<\/strong><\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Jessica&nbsp;Wormald<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those investigating, prosecuting and\ndefending crimes often recruit phoneticians and acousticians as expert\nwitnesses in criminal trials.&nbsp; When audio\nor video recordings are produced as evidence, these experts might be asked to\nconsider a range of issues: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>does the voice in this 999 call recording\nbelong to the suspect? <\/li><li>what are the people in this bugged car\nrecording saying, and who said what?<\/li><li>can you tell me where the speakers in this abuse\nvideo come from, based on their accent?<\/li><li>is this interview recording an authentic record\nof the conversation, or has it been tampered with?<\/li><li>is this sound a gunshot?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using examples from criminal cases, I\nwill discuss how forensic recordings are analysed to answer some of these\nquestions, and explore the practical issues involved with producing evidence\nfor the criminal justice system and presenting conclusions in court.
