{"id":14,"date":"2017-04-17T15:25:19","date_gmt":"2017-04-17T15:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/chromoscope\/?page_id=14"},"modified":"2020-07-31T16:08:25","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T16:08:25","slug":"chromscope-in-the-wild","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/chromoscope\/chromscope-in-the-wild\/","title":{"rendered":"Chromscope in the Wild"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are a number of other instances of Chromoscope being used &#8220;in the wild&#8221;, including by people other than the original developers.<\/p>\n<h2>Planck<\/h2>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chromoscope.net\/planck\">Planckoscope<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chromoscope.net\/planck\">Planckoscope<\/a> is a bespoke version of Chromoscope designed to show images from the Planck satellite. It includes an additional &#8220;menu&#8221; in the lower right, and\u00a0a number of overlay layers. There are two views, one (the default) showing the various &#8220;components&#8221; (dust, synchrotron, carbon monoxide etc.), and another showing a range of frequencies. There is also a &#8220;Polarisation&#8221; check box, which shows a polarisation view for frequencies\/components\u00a0for which there is polarisation\u00a0information.<\/p>\n<p>Planckscope\u00a0was created for an exhibit at the <a href=\"http:\/\/sse.royalsociety.org\/2013\/exhibits\/dawn-of-time\/\">2015 Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition<\/a>. The source code is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/chrisnorth\/Planckoscope\">GitHub<\/a>, and the\u00a0tilesets and full-sky images for Planckoscope\u00a0can be downloaded\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/astrog80.astro.cf.ac.uk\/Planck\/Planckoscope\/download\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/thecmb.org\">TheCMB.org<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>The same all-sky images are displayed, shown as a 3D sphere which can be rotated, at <a href=\"http:\/\/thecmb.org\">thecmb.org<\/a>. This site was created by <a href=\"http:\/\/dpgeorge.net\/\">Damien George<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Herschel Space Observatory<\/h2>\n<h4>OSHI<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/oshi.esa.int\">Online Showcase of Herschel Images<\/a> (OSHI), which was hosted and maintained by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\">ESA<\/a>, was based on Chromoscope (though doesn&#8217;t show multiple wavelengths). Note that OSHI is no longer available<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/herschel.cf.ac.uk\/chromoscope\/results\">UK Herschel website<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>A range\u00a0of the results from the Herschel Space Observatory are shown on the <a href=\"http:\/\/herschel.cf.ac.uk\/chromoscope\/results\">UK Herschel website<\/a>. It uses &#8220;KML markers&#8221; to generate and display icons for the results, which link to the original news stories.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/gleamoscope.icrar.org\/gleamoscope\/trunk\/src\/\">GLEAMoscope<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The GLEAM (<strong>G<\/strong>a<strong>L<\/strong>actic and <strong>E<\/strong>xtragalactic <strong>A<\/strong>ll-sky <strong>M<\/strong>WA Survey) collaboration displayed their data on <a href=\"http:\/\/gleamoscope.icrar.org\/gleamoscope\/trunk\/src\/\">GLEAMoscope<\/a>, which shows a multi-wavelength view of the sky at radio wavelengths &#8211; at least those that are\u00a0visible from Australia &#8211; from the Murchison Widefield Array. The images are also available as an <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.icrar.gleam\">Android app<\/a>. Developed by Natasha Hurley-Walker, with input from the Chromoscope team, Gleamoscope\u00a0even made\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/27\/science\/gleamoscope-australia.html?_r=0\">New York Times<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chromoscope.net\/gravoscope\">Gravitational Waves<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0localisations of sources detected by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ligo.org\">LIGO<\/a> detectors\u00a0are presented on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chromoscope.net\/gravoscope\">Gravoscope,<\/a>\u00a0using the overlay method developed for Planckoscope. Gravoscope is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/chrisnorth\/gravoscope\">GitHub<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>HOPS<\/h2>\n<p>The H2O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) used Chromoscope to display their data. Chromoscope was cited in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1071\/AS11062\">Walsh et al. (2011).<\/a> Unfortunately the HOPS version is no longer available.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/member.ipmu.jp\/ting-wen.lan\/DIB_SDSS\/\">DIB-SDSS<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/member.ipmu.jp\/ting-wen.lan\/DIB_SDSS\/\">website<\/a> uses Chromoscope to mad &#8220;Diffuse Interstellar Bands&#8221; and corrrelate diffuse interstellar bands and correlate with other information, such as interstellar dust, atomic hydrogen and molecules.<\/p>\n<h2>Educational Resources<\/h2>\n<p>As a simple and effective way to view the sky across the electromagnetic spectrum, Chromoscope has been used by many teachers. It is used in the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/herschel.cf.ac.uk\/education\/school-activities\/resources#multiwavelength\">Multiwavelength Universe<\/a>&#8221; resource developed\u00a0by Cardiff University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There are a number of other instances of Chromoscope being used \"in the wild\", including by people other than the original developers.
