A patient representative reflects on her involvement, to date, in the PRONTO Trial.<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u201cWill you join as our PPI rep?\u201d was the shout<\/p>\n

\u201cWe heard you’d had sepsis and are keen to help out.\u201d
\nIn Liverpool we met, there was much to explain
\nAll those abbreviations aren’t good for my brain!<\/p>\n

Agreeing Trial name and logo was our first task
\nApplication lay summary, the very next ask.
\nPRONTO approved, our work can now start
\nMeetings were scheduled, timelines and chart.<\/p>\n

Bedside test for procalcitonin, a known sepsis marker
\n‘Cos when diagnosing we need to be smarter.
\nCould it help recognise sepsis the faster,
\nProving to be an accurate forecaster?<\/p>\n

We need to stay sharp, use antibiotics more wisely
\nPatient outcomes improved, our findings shared widely.
\nCan we minimise overuse of these precious meds.
\nWhilst ensuring our patients are safe in their beds?<\/p>\n

So, all ready to go, we were quick off the block
\nThen COVID arrived, a need to take stock.
\nThe hospital teams, they were rushed off their feet
\nFor the saving of lives, PRONTO takes a back seat.<\/p>\n

We heed the advice not to meet in a room,
\nAll future TMG’s\u00a0 are to take place on Zoom
\nEvery month online sessions we\u00a0 now must\u00a0 attend
\nA slow start for PRONTO \u2013 but it wasn’t the end!<\/p>\n

User friendly patient leaflets are going be needed
\nPlain English required \u2013 no acronyms \u2013 I pleaded.
\nPatients will be assigned to both arms of the Trial,
\nData collected, reports by the pile.<\/p>\n

Five thousand recruits we are now appraising
\nThe research nurses out there are truly amazing.
\nEven through Covid, patients were seen and assessed
\nOur researchers worked on, they’re truly the best.<\/p>\n

Is our Trial acceptable to patients, we need to be sure
\nNow they are home, their thoughts we procure
\nInterviewing patients, their experiences revealing
\nAs they tell us their stories and how they’re now feeling.<\/p>\n

Patients need support, it would be good to sign post
\nSupport groups and charities, who could help them the most?
\nICU steps, CRUSE, the UK Sepsis Trust
\nA friendly listening ear is considered a must.<\/p>\n

Still lots to discover, as PRONTO forges ahead
\nStudy qualitative interviews,consider what was said.
\nIt’s acceptability to patients and the hospital team
\nAll needs confirming before we mainstream.<\/p>\n
