South West Research Hub event meeting 5th September 2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 2nd<\/sup> South West Research Hub meeting was\nhosted by the Centre for Trials Research on Thursday 5th<\/sup> September\n2019 in Cardiff University\u2019s Glamorgan Building. This year\u2019s theme was Trial\nMethodology. There were around 60 delegates from across the South West region\nand G4 partnership, including The Centre for Trials Research (CTR), Bristol\nRandomised Trials Collaboration (BRTC), Clinical Trials and Evaluation Unit\n(CTEU) Bristol, Peninsula Clinical Trials Unit (PenCTU) Plymouth, Swansea\nTrials Unit and Exeter Clinical Trials Unit (ExeCTU) \/ University of Exeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a relatively new event, with the first meeting\nhosted by Bristol last year. It aims to bring together trial methodologists and\nthose with an interest in trials research to raise awareness of what\u2019s going on\nacross the trials units, share experiences, provide an opportunity to showcase current\nor recently completed research and to be a platform for more detailed\ndiscussion and engaging with colleagues across the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delegates were mainly trial managers, senior trial managers,\nclinical trials coordinators, project managers, data managers and those\ninvolved in quality assurance and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Centre for Trials Research had a strong presence with many staff members giving talks and presenting posters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Kerry Hood, Director of the Centre for Trials Research, opened the morning session with a talk entitled \u201821st<\/sup> Century Trials \u2013 Creating the future for RCTs\u2019. This described potentially new techniques in study design and conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further\npresentations included a talk on \u2018Pharmacovigilance in the CTR\u2019 by Kelly Gee, Nagheen\nAhmed and Anne White, a summary of the BARNARDS study by Becca Milton, Angela\nCasbard presented on \u2018FAKTION: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled,\nphase I\/ II trial of an IMP in metastatic breast cancer\u2019 and Rhys\nWilliams-Thomas on his study within a trial (SWAT) that has been incorporated\ninto the PACE HD and SenITA trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The keynote speaker was Professor Athene Lane, a Reader in Trials Research at the University of Bristol, who presented on establishing the evidence for randomised trial design and conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Posters\nwere presented during lunch. CTR posters comprised FLIGHT (Julie Pell and Paula\nFoscarini-Craggs), TRIDENT (Cheney Drew), ADVANCE (Jo Smith), SeNITA (Rhys\nWilliams-Thomas), PriMUS (Beth Pell) and the PV & Safety team (Kelly Gee, Nagheen\nAhmed and Anne White).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A competition for the best poster was judged by Professor Kerry Hood, who said there was an amazing array of posters and found it a challenging task to pick the best. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afternoon session<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Vicky Shepherd kicked off the afternoon session with a talk about \u2018Consent models with vulnerable adults\u2019 relating to her NIHR Doctoral fellowship. Then an update on PenCTU and a recent SWAT was given by Sarah Campbell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CTEU\nBristol gave two talks: \u2018Introducing a web-based Investigational Medicinal\nProduct management system: IMP-Track\u2019 by Samantha de Jesus and \u2018Dissemination\nstrategies in the AIRWAYS-2 trial\u2019 by Maddie Clout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An\nupdate on Swansea Trials Unit was given by Professor Greg Fegan and a summary\nof the USTEKID trial was given by Dr Kym Thorne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last talk was by Gurmel Bhachu from Health and Care Research Wales on \u2018Making training relevant and an update on research approvals\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The day ended with final thoughts from lead organiser, Dr Emma Thomas-Jones who felt that the day had covered a wide range of trial methodology innovations through all stages of the trial life cycle, including novel recruitment and data collection methods, innovative IMP tracking and wide-ranging dissemination activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nwinner of the poster competition was announced, and in Kerry\u2019s judgement when\nconsidering poster design, science and originality the overall winner was Dr\nAmanda Lewis from the BRTC with the poster entitled \u2018Obtaining electronic\nroutine resource use data directly from hospitals; experience from the UPSTREAM\nrandomised controlled trial\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feedback from delegates on the day was positive, with\ncomments stating that it was a well organised meeting with a nice mix of talks\nand posters and the methodology focus worked well. It was useful for sharing\nexperiences across the breath of trials and showed the scale of work being done\nacross the region. There were a great range of topics, new\/ innovative\ntechniques for trial management and it was interesting to learn about emerging\nmethodology that trial methodologists can get involved with. Delegates said\nthey would like the event to occur next year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
