Sowing the seeds of\ncollaboration <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In June 2018 I was fortunate to be selected to join a Newton Fund OPAL<\/a> event in Brazil on identifying and addressing shared challenges of conducting health and social care research with older people, funded by the British Council and the Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). The programme aimed to develop research collaborations between the UK (led by University of Nottingham) and Brazil (led by Sao Paulo State University UNESP), and led to the development of several working groups including one focusing on long-term care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A year later an opportunity arose to join the faculty for a\nsecond programme in Brazil which was centred on research for \u2018Improving care in\nLong-Term Care Institutions in Brazil and Europe through Collaboration and\nResearch – LOTUS\u2019 and I was awarded seed corn funding from the Division\nof Population Medicine<\/a> to attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nurturing green\nshoots and new beginnings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The GCRF<\/a>\nfunded LOTUS workshop at UNESP in Botucatu brought together care home\nresearchers from the UK, Austria, the Netherlands, and Brazil, and was led by\nDr Reena Devi, Dr Kathryn Hinsliff-Smith and Prof Adam Gordon. There was also\nan opportunity for Brazilian gerontology students to join for part of the three\nday workshop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first part of the programme established a common understanding\nabout how ageing populations and long-term care sectors in Brazil and Europe\ncompare, share some of the existing research, before identifying the current\nchallenges for Brazilian and European care homes and starting work to generate\ninnovative and collaborative solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharing experiences\nfrom our care home research in Wales<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Part of the programme explored long-term care as a place to\ndo research, during which I talked about research co-operation between universities\nand long term care describing models we have used in Wales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was illustrated with examples such as the PRINCESS\nStudy<\/a>, Research\nPriority Setting in Care Homes<\/a>, DECISION\nStudy<\/a>, and the establishment of the ENRICH Cymru<\/a> network of\n\u2019research ready\u2019 care homes by the Wales School for Social Care Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building research\ncollaborations and friendships<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An important part of both the OPAL and LOTUS programmes is\nthe developing of research collaborations both within and between countries,\nand also the opportunity to build friendships. We were very fortunate that\nBrazil has such beautiful scenery, delicious food and drink, and lovely people\nwhich makes the perfect backdrop for this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next steps \u2026.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Collaborative groups have been established to explore\nspecific areas for future international research, such as enhancing dignity in\ncare homes which has already been identified as a\nresearch priority<\/a> by care home staff in the UK, and linking with\nresearchers to identify and explore further research needs and opportunities.\nThese collaborations and \u2018new shoots\u2019 of research proposals will be developed\nfurther through a second LOTUS event at the University of Nottingham later in\nthe year.
