[<a href=\"https:\/\/rpo.library.utoronto.ca\/poems\/telling-bees\">3<\/a>]\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-GB\">This cautionary tale of neglect, highlights the interdependence of the human\u2019s and the bee\u2019s wellbeing. Mike Hulme, a professor for human geography, argues that understanding the existence of such a personal and emotional connection to an environmental subject is key in shaping our perception of the issue and consequent actions. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Disagree-about-Climate-Change-Understanding\/dp\/0521727324\">4<\/a>]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, this relationship of emotional care appears to have been forgotten.\u00a0Since 1940, the number of bee colonies in the United States has halved from 5 million to ca. 2.5 million. [<a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/316\/5827\/970\">5<\/a>] The phenomenon behind these hive losses is called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).<\/p>\n<p>This blog entry will give a brief overview of CCD, its causes and consequences, how it is being addressed, and what you can do to help.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What Is Colony Collapse Disorder?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The term Colony Collapse Disorder is commonly associated with the mass disappearance (and in most cases death) of a hive\u2019s worker bees, leaving their queen, young bees, larvae, and their nurse bees behind. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/colony-collapse-disorder\">6<\/a>]\u00a0After initial disagreement over the causes of CCD, the scientific community reached a consensus in the early 2010s identifying six interconnected drivers of CCD (see table <em>The Six P\u2019s of Colony Collapse Disorder<\/em>). [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pollinator-protection\/pollinator-health-concerns\">7<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rKQNx0av7eY\">8<\/a>] While parasites, pests and pathogens harm the bees themselves, the pesticides used to treat these, and other unwanted organisms, are also detrimental to bees\u2019 health. The threat to smaller bee hives is even bigger as researchers have found a direct correlation between a hive\u2019s level of genetic diversity and its chances of survival. Neonics are \u201cthe most widely used insecticides in the world\u201d. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GqA42M4RtxE\">9<\/a>] Bees that come in contact with these substances often lose their ability to find their way back to the hive as neonics attack their nervous systems, leading to \u201cconvulsion, paralysis and death\u201d. [<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00114-013-1065-y\">12<\/a>] This concept is often referred to as <em>genetic diversity<\/em>. [<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00114-013-1065-y\">12<\/a>]<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\n<td colspan=\"4\" width=\"604\"><strong><em>P<\/em><\/strong><em>eople<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Humans influence a number of factors contributing to CCD:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>habitat loss<\/li>\n<li>climate change<\/li>\n<li>monocultures<\/li>\n<li>effective use of pesticides\n<ul>\n<li>poisoning bees<\/li>\n<li>creating a diet lacking diversity<\/li>\n<li>weakening bees&#8217; immune systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Human beings inflict additional stress on commercial hives as they are transported often and over long distances to pollinate various crops.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Why Should We Care?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Pollination: It\u2019s Nuts<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to the Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC), \u201cat least 30 percent of the world\u2019s crops [meaning \u201c<strong>Every third bite of food\u00a0<\/strong>you take\u201d] and 90 percent of our wild plants\u201d are pollinated by bees. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/resources\/why-we-need-bees-natures-tiny-workers-put-food-our-tables\">15<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/knowledge_hub\/all_publications\/living_planet_report_2018\/\">16<\/a>] They pollinate approximately $ 265 billion worth of crops per year, making commercial bee hives worth more than their average weight in gold. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GqA42M4RtxE\">9<\/a>]\u00a0The Californian almond industry alone (producing ca. \u201c80 % of the world\u2019s almonds\u201d) is expected to lose $ 83 million yearly due to CCD, as pollination fees rise since beekeepers have to compensate for larger hive losses. [<a href=\"https:\/\/s.giannini.ucop.edu\/uploads\/giannini_public\/cb\/7c\/cb7c1177-c7d2-44df-a5a8-8aad2f3ed858\/v14n5_4.pdf\">17<\/a>]<a href=\"\/\/1FBFEDD6-0FE8-4E58-9C10-F89AACCAB8F3#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Species Loss<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The disappearance of the bees is often portrayed as the proverbial \u201ccanary in the coal mine\u201d signalling species loss, with some regions already adapting to the bees\u2019 disappearance, i.e. the Arctic, where flies are acting as pollinators. [<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-10-absence-bees-flies-responsible-pollination.html\">18<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3kydE9PW0H8\">19<\/a>] Aside from CCD\u2019s detrimental financial consequences, bees are essential to our ecosystem \u2013 without them a great number of species, including humans, would be harmed and some even eradicated. [<a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/knowledge_hub\/all_publications\/living_planet_report_2018\/\">16<\/a>] This is particularly upsetting in view of the WWF\u2019s most recent <em>Living Planet Report\u00a0<\/em>detailing that \u201cbetween 1970 and 2014\u201d the earth\u2019s animal population dropped by 60 percent. [<a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/knowledge_hub\/all_publications\/living_planet_report_2018\/\">16<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Will we let bees be next?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What is Being Done?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Regulatory (In)Action &amp; Creating Awareness<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A number of countries, including the UK, US, Canada, Germany and Australia, and international institutions, such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), have responded to the threat of CCD by launching investigations into the disappearance of pollinators. [<a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/knowledge_hub\/all_publications\/living_planet_report_2018\/\">16<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deutschland.de\/de\/topic\/umwelt\/bedrohte-bienen-deutschlands-strategie-fuer-bienenschutz\">20<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundesregierung.de\/breg-de\/aktuelles\/bienen-brauchen-unseren-schutz-845920\">21<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2011\/03\/368622-humans-must-change-behaviour-save-bees-vital-food-production-un-report\">22<\/a>] These inquiries are often the product of international collaborations, as illustrated by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services\u2019 (IPBES) report on <em>Pollinators, Pollination and Food Production<\/em>, which cautions policymakers to pay attention to \u201cthe lethal and sub-lethal effects of pesticides [\u2026] on wild and managed bees\u201d. [<a href=\"https:\/\/naturwissenschaften.ch\/service\/publications\/80004-ipbes-report-on-pollinators-pollination-and-food-production\">23<\/a>] Peter Haas, a professor of political science, argues that the collective scientific knowledge generated by this community of experts and professionals\u2014what he refers to as an <strong>epistemic community <\/strong>\u2014shapes national interests. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/2706652?seq=1#metadata_info_tab_contents\">24<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Overall, collective (national) action has mainly been confined to the realm of research and education with information campaigns from governments, international institutions, NGOs, non-profits and corporations advocating for bee-friendly flowers. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3kydE9PW0H8\">19<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T05FDxZJ4bs\">26<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0AeYE6a4KVE\">27<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bringbackthebees.ca\/#a\">28<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheerios.com\/bring-back-the-bees\/\">29<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jOqAuNfw5Qc\">30<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bee-friendlier.com\/\">31<\/a>] Michael Maniates, a professor of social sciences, criticises such DIY problem solving approaches arguing that these a) shift responsibility away from governments and corporations to individuals and b) fail to address the root causes of the issue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/5F26E7ED-3954-41EB-B09A-B7752C273FAC#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While planting flowers to create bee habitats and diversified diets is important, these initiatives do not address the larger problems of pesticide usage and climate change. Here, the EU stands out as a positive example, having banned a number of neonics (pesticides) as well as launching the <strong>EU Pollinators Initiative\u00a0<\/strong>in June of 2018 setting action targets for itself and its member countries.[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deutschland.de\/de\/topic\/umwelt\/bedrohte-bienen-deutschlands-strategie-fuer-bienenschutz\">20<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundesregierung.de\/breg-de\/aktuelles\/bienen-brauchen-unseren-schutz-845920\">21<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/nature\/conservation\/species\/pollinators\/index_en.htm\">25<\/a>]<a href=\"\/\/F3A86555-4B12-4EAE-AEA1-27F855E17169#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/F3A86555-4B12-4EAE-AEA1-27F855E17169#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/8E1B512E-78F5-44FD-A43F-B7378E910741#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/EF998FDA-E056-4C67-AF95-8264786B31BA#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/EF998FDA-E056-4C67-AF95-8264786B31BA#_ednref2\" name=\"_edn2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>What makes people care?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mike Hulme argues that our perception of scientific phenomena, especially those posing a danger to ourselves, are defined by our personal experience and emotions. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Disagree-about-Climate-Change-Understanding\/dp\/0521727324\">4<\/a>] Thus, personal histories and scientific knowledge are intertwined in shaping our understanding of a problem, which in turn effects our response to it. Going back to the cautionary tale of telling the bees, the scientifically proven interconnectedness of bee keepers\u2019 and their hives\u2019 well-being are highlighted through the emotionally coded practice of \u2018telling the bees\u2019. In other words, personal connections and stories lead people to emotionally invest in an issue causing them to care about it and attempt to find ways of improving or even solving it.
