An initial interest for a reading and data analysis group with a focus on approaches taken from ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (EMCA) emerged from a group of SOCSI PhD students who discussed their ethnographic data and tried to find ways to produce rigorous analyses of it. Dr Rob Smith took this initiative up and organised regular virtual meetings on Fridays during the first lockdown in the beginning of 2020. We started by taking the very disruption that forced us to meet virtually as an object of analysis and assembled materials on the organisation of public space during the pandemic. In April of that year, we turned our extensive internal discussion on how to adequately and ethically study a seemingly disrupted social order during a pandemic into a joint paper on “Ethnography and the new normal”.
