The panel of industry, practitioner and academic experts at Wales’ first AI for FinTech conference.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday 25 February 2020, we hosted a FinTech for AI event on behalf of FinTech Wales<\/a> and co-sponsor Confused.com<\/a>. In our latest post, Gavin Powell, their General Secretary, reflects on the event.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It was one of those great moments where all the hard work\nthat\u2019s happening with FinTech in Wales suddenly makes sense and you get to see\na really positive outcome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were fortunate enough to bring together a group of\nskilled, talented, expert, articulated and passionate people to present on everything\nAI in FinTech. And it was a privilege to do so for the benefit of all those\ninterested in this important topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lecture theatre room in Cardiff Business School\u2019s Postgraduate\nTeaching Centre<\/a> was full of people all with a common interest in Artificial\nIntelligence from major FinTech companies, directors of large FTSE 100\nfinancial services organisations, senior government officials, local home grown\nand scaling AI enterprises and a healthy smattering of academics and next\ngeneration start-ups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was, for us as organisers, the perfect ingredients that\nensured a great and impactful event for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day opened with a presentation from Arman Eshraghi, Professor\nof Finance at Cardiff\nBusiness School<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He gave a great overview of AI and how it\u2019s related and used\nin FinTech, taking us back to the origins of Artificial Intelligence and\nMachine Learning from the great Claude Shannon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was an ideal start to warm up the audience and really\nset the scene for the rest of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Professor Eshraghi, was Alun Preece, Professor of\nIntelligent Systems from Cardiff\nUniversity\u2019s School of Computer Science and Informatics<\/a>. His energy and\npassion for AI can only be matched by the length of service he has committed to\nthe subject. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has given him experience that\u2019s hard to match and it\nwas great that he was able to share some of that with us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Preece took us on a deeper journey of where AI is\nat present and gave insight into his work on\nHuman-AI collaboration.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna Fink shares consultancy insight on AI and FinTech.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

As Associate Director of Global Innovation at the big\nconsulting firm EY<\/a>, Anna Fink is well\nplaced to talk on AI in FinTech; particularly given the number of companies\nthat EY work with on a regular basis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was so insightful to hear the perspective of consultants\non how FinTech, Financial Services and Consultancy firms can work together\neffectively to better harness technologies such as AI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practical experience is always a great way to learn good\nlessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pete Burnap, Professor of Data Science and Cybersecurity\nalso from Cardiff University\u2019s School of Computer Sciences and Informatics,\ncontinued the broader morning theme from Anna, by focusing on how AI is used\nwithin to cybersecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cybersecurity is an ever more important factor of the\nFinTech community. And, raising awareness on it to encourage its addition by\ndesign from the outset is a positive for the sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On top of his role at Cardiff University, Professor Burnap\nis also the Director of the Airbus Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Analytics<\/a>. The\ncentre works across industry, academia and government to provide a focus for\ncyber security analytics in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finishing the morning session was Lucy Young, Business\nIntelligence Manager at Amplyfi<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amplyfi is definitely one of the rising star companies in AI\nin Wales. Keep an eye on them and see how they grow in the future! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lunch was taken in Cardiff Business School\u2019s Executive Education Suite<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
