In our latest post, Gavin Powell, their General Secretary, reflects on the event.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was one of those great moments where all the hard work\nthat\u2019s happening with FinTech in Wales suddenly makes sense and you get to see\na really positive outcome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were fortunate enough to bring together a group of\nskilled, talented, expert, articulated and passionate people to present on everything\nAI in FinTech. And it was a privilege to do so for the benefit of all those\ninterested in this important topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lecture theatre room in Cardiff Business School\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/campus-developments\/projects\/postgraduate-teaching-centre\">Postgraduate\nTeaching Centre<\/a> was full of people all with a common interest in Artificial\nIntelligence from major FinTech companies, directors of large FTSE 100\nfinancial services organisations, senior government officials, local home grown\nand scaling AI enterprises and a healthy smattering of academics and next\ngeneration start-ups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was, for us as organisers, the perfect ingredients that\nensured a great and impactful event for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back to the origins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Professor-Arman-Eshraghi-at-AI-and-FinTech-event.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1916\" width=\"581\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Professor-Arman-Eshraghi-at-AI-and-FinTech-event.png 555w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Professor-Arman-Eshraghi-at-AI-and-FinTech-event-510x338.png 510w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Professor-Arman-Eshraghi-at-AI-and-FinTech-event-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 581px) 100vw, 581px\" \/><figcaption>Professor Arman Eshraghi introducing the concepts of AI and FinTech at one-day conference.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day opened with a presentation from Arman Eshraghi, Professor\nof Finance at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/\">Cardiff\nBusiness School<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He gave a great overview of AI and how it\u2019s related and used\nin FinTech, taking us back to the origins of Artificial Intelligence and\nMachine Learning from the great Claude Shannon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was an ideal start to warm up the audience and really\nset the scene for the rest of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Professor Eshraghi, was Alun Preece, Professor of\nIntelligent Systems from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/computer-science\">Cardiff\nUniversity\u2019s School of Computer Science and Informatics<\/a>. And, raising awareness on it to encourage its addition by\ndesign from the outset is a positive for the sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On top of his role at Cardiff University, Professor Burnap\nis also the Director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/research\/explore\/research-units\/airbus-centre-of-excellence-in-cyber-security-analytics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Airbus Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Analytics<\/a>. The\ncentre works across industry, academia and government to provide a focus for\ncyber security analytics in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finishing the morning session was Lucy Young, Business\nIntelligence Manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/amplyfi.com\/\">Amplyfi<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amplyfi is definitely one of the rising star companies in AI\nin Wales. whose MATLAB tool I spent many hours using at Airbus for rapid prototyping of\nAI next generation products. <\/li><li>Amplyfi &#8211; Lucy showed how it\u2019s possible to look\ndeeper into the web for information and intelligence. <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senseforth.ai\/\">Senseforth\nAI<\/a> \u2013 who discussed the bot-based products they\u2019re developing through\nNatural Language Processing and are ranking in the top 5 worldwide in terms of\nperformance of those products.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ethical, transparent and auditable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The afternoon session was more focused on how AI can be more\nethical, transparent and auditable with a rationale of how we can regulate the\narea better to futureproof what the FinTech sector is doing with AI and ensure\nthe best path is taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First up was the charismatic Symon Garfield, <a href=\"https:\/\/mvp.microsoft.com\/en-us\/PublicProfile\/4039998?fullName=Symon%20Garfield\">Digital\nStrategy Advisor from Microsoft<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Symon-Garfield-at-AI-for-FinTech-event.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1922\" width=\"477\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Symon-Garfield-at-AI-for-FinTech-event.png 419w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Symon-Garfield-at-AI-for-FinTech-event-300x197.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><figcaption>Symon Garfield on Microsoft&#8217;s vision for a ethical and responsible AI.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working with a multitude of other companies through Microsoft,\nit was enlightening to hear how ethics and responsibilities should be included\nwith AI and its development, and how that fits in with our financial services\nsector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s great to see major tech companies like Microsoft\npushing forward in areas like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following on nicely from Symon was Katherine Browne, part of\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fca.org.uk\/firms\/innovation\">the Innovate Leadership Team\nat the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re playing a pivotal role in developing the FCA\u2019s\napproach to innovation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"661\" height=\"411\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Katharine-Brown-at-AI-for-FinTech-event.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1930\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Katharine-Brown-at-AI-for-FinTech-event.png 661w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Katharine-Brown-at-AI-for-FinTech-event-544x338.png 544w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Katharine-Brown-at-AI-for-FinTech-event-300x187.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 661px) 100vw, 661px\" \/><figcaption>During her presentation, Katharine Brown talked about how the FCA are thinking about how AI is applied in future financial services products.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katherine gave insights into how data and ethics are\nregarded by the FCA and how we can start to think about how AI is applied in financial\nservices products in the future. It was clear that this is very much an area of\ninterest to the FCA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final talk of the day was from our expert on explainable\nAI and delivered by Richard Tomsett of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/blogs\/emerging-technology\/\">the Emerging Technology\nteam at IBM<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard has many years researching and applying ways that allow AI to be better interpreted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Richard-Tomsett-at-AI-for-FinTech-event.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1920\" width=\"506\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Richard-Tomsett-at-AI-for-FinTech-event.png 427w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/business-school\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/620\/2020\/03\/Richard-Tomsett-at-AI-for-FinTech-event-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><figcaption>Richard Tomsett delivered the final presentation on overcoming the pitfalls of AI.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He showed us some of the pitfalls of AI and how we can overcome them to make it better and more transparent so that we can understand how and why it makes the decisions that it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rounding off the day we had a panel session and were joined\nby Andy Brockway Chief Technology Officer of Confused.com and Dave Braines the\nChief Technology Officer of Emerging Technology for IBM. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We discussed the next big changes in AI, how its regulation\nwill impact the sector and the challenges organisations are facing in its\napplication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, we took questions from the crowd.
