Cardiff Business School sleep-in 2019 built on last year\u2019s successes and once again raised awareness and money for Llamau, the School\u2019s official charity partner. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In our latest post, Sophie Lison, a second-year undergraduate studying BSc Business Management (Marketing)<\/a>, explains how she and her classmates organised a sleep-in to raise money and awareness for Llamau<\/a>, Wales’ leading homelessness charity for young people and vulnerable women.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this\nterm, me and a few other second year business students ran a sleep-in<\/a> event as part of our Marketing in Society module, led by Dr\nCarolyn Strong<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event built on last year\u2019s successes<\/a> and once again raised awareness and money for Llamau, the School\u2019s official charity partner<\/a> since 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were aware\nthat sleep-ins have had mixed responses and even some criticism from some. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

People argue that\nthey\u2019re insensitive and fail to acknowledge the real experiences of homeless\npeople.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homelessness not houselessness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But what we\nwanted to show with our event is that you don’t have to be on the streets to be\nsuffering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our emphasis was on homelessness, not houselessness. And there are so many examples of this type of experience in society today. Sofa surfing, sublets, squatting and those without a supportive family unit are just some examples.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Llamau\u2019s work\nseeks to engage with homeless people no matter what their level experience\nmight be. They want to change futures for the better with Gender specific\nsupport, domestic\nabuse refuges<\/a>, safe accommodation<\/a>, mental\nhealth support<\/a>, to end\nthe cycle of abuse<\/a> for young women and homeless young people in\nand around Cardiff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their initiatives\nmean that people at risk can access support in their homes<\/a> to maintain their tenancies and avoid becoming homeless. And, for\npeople who are already homeless, their facilities provide opportunities to learn life and work skills to\nmove on<\/a> to employment and overcome homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netflix and shelter-building<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Staff and students participated in group activities, like shelter-building, which got pretty competitive. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It was the second\ntime that Cardiff Business School had held a sleep-in, so we were able to get donations\nfrom local businesses in and around Cardiff for food and drinks for the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students and\nstaff tucked into Domino\u2019s pizza and fresh burritos before doing group\nactivities like shelter-building which got pretty competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also held a raffle\nwith prizes donated by the event sponsors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cardiff University Show Choir performed a five song set.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Dean Professor\nRachel Ashworth said a few words and we had a set of five songs from the Cardiff\nUniversity Show Choir<\/a>, a society from the Students\u2019 Union that competes annually in a\nnationally recognised competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evening came\nto a close with hot chocolates all around and snuggling up for the night in\nfront of Netflix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the morning we\ngot up at 6am to appreciate how people at risk of homelessness would go to school\nor work and continue their normal days despite their circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a fun event to get staff and students together and a great way to end my second-year studies at Cardiff Business School. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I really enjoyed\nlearning more about Llamau as an organisation while organising the sleep-in. And\nit was a great way to apply the things I\u2019ve learned from my Marketing Society module\nto a real-life charity and worthy cause. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also had the\nchance to attend their Annual Impact Event where I witnessed, first-hand, the\nimpact our events and the public have on many peoples lives across the capital\ncity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was very moving\nto hear the personal success stories of the individuals supported by Llamau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If anyone\u2019s thinking about organising a sleep-in of their own, I\u2019d really recommend it. It was a fun event to get staff and students together and a great way to end my second-year studies at Cardiff Business School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
