And it worked really quite well with white text below the screen. I was pleased.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-483 media-483\" class=\"image align-none\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2022\/09\/Screenshot-2022-09-16-at-15.37.52.png\" alt=\"My slide with white text underneath from closed captioning &quot;Talk to you about discrimination on placement&quot;\" width=\"2071\" height=\"1654\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, it didn&#8217;t work on my colleague&#8217;s computer and I couldn&#8217;t make it work on one of Cardiff University&#8217;s computers but hopefully we can change that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been having a play and Powerpoint will do some translation too. Heddiw dwi'n mynd i siarad am anabledd&quot;\" width=\"1384\" height=\"282\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/present-with-real-time-automatic-captions-or-subtitles-in-powerpoint-68d20e49-aec3-456a-939d-34a79e8ddd5f\">This help page<\/a> from Microsoft shows what&#8217;s possible in terms of languages.<\/p>\n<p>My opinion is that we should all use closed captions if possible. The educational advice seems quite clear: Gernsbacher1 (2015) says &#8220;Video Captions Benefit Everyone&#8221; with a very inspiring quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Imagine a technique that can improve children\u2019s reading skills (<a class=\" bibr popnode\" role=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5214590\/#R49\">Linebarger, Piotrowski, &amp; Greenwood, 2010<\/a>), boost adolescents\u2019 written and spoken vocabulary (<a class=\" bibr popnode\" role=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5214590\/#R39\">Davey &amp; Parkhill, 2012<\/a>), increase college students\u2019 attention to lectures (<a class=\" bibr popnode\" role=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5214590\/#R32\">Steinfeld, 1998<\/a>), enhance second-language learners\u2019 pronunciation (<a id=\"__tag_581040967\" class=\" bibr popnode tag_hotlink tag_tooltip\" role=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5214590\/#R104\">Mitterer &amp; McQueen, 2009<\/a>), and raise literacy rates in developing countries (<a class=\" bibr popnode\" role=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5214590\/#R47\">Kothari, Takeda, Joshi, &amp; Pandey, 2002<\/a>). The technique is simple: Display captions on videos.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This &#8220;technique&#8221; is available at the push of a single button. Let&#8217;s all use this button and facilitate closed captioning!<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another Microsoft page about how to: &#8220;Make your PowerPoint presentations accessible to people with disabilities&#8221; that feels important. A good step this week.
