To be honest, <strong><em>everyone<\/em><\/strong> should have a development plan. Your plan should consider where you are and where you want to go. This is particularly important if you&#8217;re on a <strong>fixed term contract<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Key questions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What could you learn that would help you do your job better?<\/li>\n<li>What are you going to do when this contract is finished?<\/li>\n<li>What do you want to achieve over the duration of this contract?<\/li>\n<li>How are you going to achieve those things?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your development plan doesn&#8217;t have to be written down but it would be better if it was.<br \/>\nYou don&#8217;t have to share your development plan with anyone but it would be more useful if you did.<\/p>\n<p>There has never been a better time for learning and developing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/humrs\/research\/training\/training\/researchers\/index.html\">Cardiff Researcher Programme<\/a> has been launched. All the courses are free.<\/li>\n<li>There are online courses &#8211; I like the look of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edx.org\/course\/berkeley\/stat2-1x\/introduction-statistics\/1138\">Introduction to Statistics<\/a>. There are LOTS of others.<\/li>\n<li>There are conferences and workshops organised by scientific societies. I&#8217;m a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biochemistry.org\/Conferences\/AllConferences.aspx\">Biochemical Society<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/immunology.org\/\">British Society for Immunology<\/a> (other societies are available).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why not write a development plan for yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an easy way to start:<\/p>\n<p>Get a blank page and think about these questions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What could you learn that would help you do your job better?<\/li>\n<li>How will you use this skill?<\/li>\n<li>Think about the next three months<\/li>\n<li>Think about the one year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have written a list &#8211; great.<\/p>\n<p>Which thing on the list excites you the most?<\/p>\n<p>Do that first.
