{"id":243,"date":"2018-12-17T18:17:18","date_gmt":"2018-12-17T18:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/?p=243"},"modified":"2022-04-13T15:08:21","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T15:08:21","slug":"first-c4me-staff-development-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/first-c4me-staff-development-day\/","title":{"rendered":"First C4ME Staff Development Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over a year ago, the idea of an INSET day was suggested for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/medicine\/courses\">Centre for Medical Education<\/a>. It was part of the School of Medicine Athena SWAN application. The idea was to get <strong>EVERYBODY<\/strong> in the Centre together for training, networking and team building. Today saw the first INSET day and I enjoyed it!<\/p>\n<p>A large part of the day was spent exploring the C4ME mission, vision and values. The first draft had been developed by the C4ME Strategy Development Team and aligned with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/thewayforward\">Way Forward 2018-2013<\/a>. Some of the context of the Centre was mentioned including info <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/education-46591500\">today about student loans<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/undergraduate\/what-and-where-study\/choosing-course\/teaching-excellence-framework-tef-what-you-need-know\">Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF)<\/a>, building relationships with other Universities and <a href=\"https:\/\/heiw.nhs.wales\/\">Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our basic mission was outlined <em><strong>as educating to improve health &amp; well being in Wales and beyond<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.11.05.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-248\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.11.05-300x295.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.11.05-300x295.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.11.05-40x40.png 40w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.11.05.png 454w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My notes of our <strong>vision<\/strong> gave me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduce inequalities<\/li>\n<li>Improve health<\/li>\n<li>Innovate<\/li>\n<li>Develop healthcare professionals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And our <strong>values<\/strong> as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Student experience<\/li>\n<li>Staff development<\/li>\n<li>Innovators \u2013 embracing &amp; building change<\/li>\n<li>Solution focused<\/li>\n<li>Collaboration<\/li>\n<li>Use resources prudently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Discussions, using the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theworldcafe.com\">World Caf\u00e9 method<\/a>, identified:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Perhaps a tension between placing students as first priority and the suggestion that most organisations have staff as the key.<\/li>\n<li>Perhaps a lack of identifying patients and the public as partners<\/li>\n<li>Some concern about about a perceived hierarchy with vision and values<\/li>\n<li>Perhaps the lack of an overt inclusion of Welsh language and culture<\/li>\n<li>A tension between producing \u201cexcellent doctors\u201d and maintaining a more inclusive vision of \u201chealthcare professionals\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was interesting!<\/p>\n<p>There were also a broad range of workshops &#8211; I attended one by Allan Theophanides entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/a2zlearning?f=tweets&amp;vertical=default&amp;src=hash\">The A-Z of Learning Technologies<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0 and delivered one with Dr Sam Hibbitts about responding to requests for adjustment from an EDI perspective.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.10.09.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-247\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.10.09-300x141.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.10.09-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.10.09-768x361.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.10.09.png 902w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As often the case, a fun part was <em><strong>meeting colleagues<\/strong><\/em>. I really enjoyed a discussion with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/126566-mcwilliams-william\">Billy\u00a0McWilliams<\/a> about a Masters Programme in which students develop all their own learning objectives and a discussion with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/126557-mcallister-marion\">Marion McAllistair<\/a> about the complete redevelopment of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/study\/postgraduate\/taught\/courses\/course\/genetic-and-genomic-counselling-msc\">MSc in Genetic and Genomic Counselling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.08.44.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-246\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.08.44-300x148.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.08.44-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.08.44-768x378.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/brennanpincardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/256\/2018\/12\/Screenshot-2018-12-17-18.08.44.png 962w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I used an EDI update:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to reflect on the great hard work done delivering education to &gt;3,000 students with diverse learning and social needs.<\/li>\n<li>to encourage us all to be kind,<\/li>\n<li>to publicise the <a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\" href=\"https:\/\/intranet.cardiff.ac.uk\/staff\/teaching-and-supporting-students\/students-health-and-wellbeing\/students-affected-by-violence-and-abuse\">Cardiff University Disclosure Response Procedure (internal link)<\/a><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\">\u00a0and <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\">to emphasise <strong>self care<\/strong> through taking a digital break and a nice Christmas holiday.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All in all, I&#8217;m really glad I attended.
