Meet the staff: Nigel Morgan

What is your name and job title?
Nigel Morgan: subject librarian. I am based in the Science & Biomedical Sciences libraries on the Cathays campus.
What are your Qualifications?
I have several library qualifications, a BA in English literature, a postgraduate degree in music MA(Mus), and a performing diploma from the London College of Music. Recently I passed my Grade 3 exam for classical guitar which I am very proud of!
Where did you live as a child?
I was born and raised in Neath where I still spend much of my time.
What do you like best about Cardiff?
I prefer Swansea! However, Cardiff’s a great place to be if you support the arts, particularly classical music. We are fortunate to have great performance venues and resident companies like Welsh National Opera and the BBC Orchestra of Wales.
What did you do before you worked here?
I worked as a librarian at the former Swansea Institute of Higher Education. Previous jobs include a stint as a library assistant at Swansea University, a Saturday assistant in Boots, and a couple of years working as a freelance piano teacher.
What was the first library book you remember reading for pleasure?
It was called Odd and the Great Bear which I borrowed from the children’s section of Neath Public Library. The cover shot brings the memory back so vividly – gosh! it was 1973!
What do you enjoy reading now?
I’m in a book club which gets me reading an assortment of stuff – some good, some awful! I usually go for middle brow fiction e.g. Booker nominees, music books e.g. composer biographies and I also like plays. I enjoy bleating about the fact I’ve read James Joyce’s Ulysses from start to finish – not once but twice!
Hard copy or electronic?
My Kindle is choc-a-bloc with books I’ve downloaded and not gotten round to reading. But I also still read print – and contrary to some opinions, print will never become obsolete!
What do you like best about Cardiff University Health Library Service?
It’s full of fizzy-whizzy talented and creative folks who are also really nice to work with.
