Image produced by Dr Anthony Hayes, Bioimaging Hub, Cardiff School of Biosciences.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the last 12 months I&#8217;v<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">e been working closely with biovisualisation specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/infocus.nlm.nih.gov\/2017\/08\/01\/bridging-the-gap-focus-on-kristen-browne\/\">Dr Kristen Brown<\/a>\u00a0at <a href=\"https:\/\/3d.nih.gov\/\">NIH3D<\/a> to curate our 3D pollen model resources <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">into a purpose-built 3D collection:\u00a0 the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/3d.nih.gov\/collections\/3d-pollen-library?tab=search\">3D Pollen Library&#8217;<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">This collection is now featured on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/3d.nih.gov\/\">NIH3D homepage<\/a>\u00a0and, at the time of writing, represents the largest collection of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">3D pollen grain models<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">worldwide. The models are all viewable\u00a0 as surface rendered or wireframe meshes and can be downloaded in x3d, stl, glb and wrl file formats for 3D printing and AR\/VR visualisation. The source confocal data is also available for download, as is the published methodology for creating the models.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">In parallel with the above, I&#8217;ve <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">e<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">stablished an ongoing collaboration with <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"><a href=\"https:\/\/museum.wales\/staff\/150\/Heather-Pardoe\/\">Dr Heather Pardoe<\/a> (senior botanist and chief palynologist at <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Amgueddfa Cymru, National Museum Wales). This collaboration has allowed us <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">to digitise and 3D model pollen grains and spores from selected plant species <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">in the museum&#8217;s extensive archival pollen collection using <a href=\"http:\/\/chrome-extension:\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/\/orca.cardiff.ac.uk\/id\/eprint\/104773\/1\/EMS%20Eng%20Sci%20j%202%202017.pdf\">methodology<\/a> we&#8217;ve developed in-house at the Bioimaging Hub. The 3D pollen models produced via this collaboration will be added to our NIH3D library as a <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"https:\/\/3d.nih.gov\/collections\/3d-pollen-library\/palynology\">separate pollen sub-collection<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">, as well as being viewable as part of the full collection. It is envisaged that these models will have significant utility as educational tools for teaching and exhibition<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"row mb-3\">\n<div class=\"col text-white orange-link\">\n<p>Please feel free to visit the 3D Pollen Library and download some of our models (they&#8217;re all free!)
