As they decay from this excited state, they emit fluorescent light of a longer wavelength than the excitation light. Fluorochromes are used\u00a0to\u00a0selectively contrast specimens for <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/bioimaging\/fluorescence\/\">fluorescent microscopy<\/a>.
