{"id":8465,"date":"2022-10-03T10:30:38","date_gmt":"2022-10-03T10:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/?p=8465"},"modified":"2023-03-22T12:43:38","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T12:43:38","slug":"teamcardiff-fundraisers-take-on-cardiff-half-marathon-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/2022\/10\/03\/teamcardiff-fundraisers-take-on-cardiff-half-marathon-2\/","title":{"rendered":"#TeamCardiff fundraisers take on Cardiff Half Marathon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Sunday 2 October, around 70 alumni, students and staff ran the Cardiff Half Marathon to raise money for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/campaign\/TeamCardiff2022\">Cardiff University research as part of #TeamCardiff.<\/a> They\u2019re aiming to raise \u00a325,000 for neuroscience and mental health, and cancer research.<\/p>\n<p>The second Cardiff Half Marathon to take place in 2022, saw thousands of runners, once again take to the streets to cover 13.1 miles, taking in some of the city\u2019s most iconic landmarks. At mile 8, our runners were greeted by our Cheer Station \u2013 where supporters and Dylan the Dragon cheered them on.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cardiff Half Marathon 2022 | Diolch #TeamCardiff | Hanner Marathon Caerdydd 2022\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4UZssWBdXtI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Laura Stephenson (BA 2008) ran in memory of her friend Areesha (Reesh). She\u2019s raising money for cancer research and was inspired by her friend\u2019s strength in the face of a devastating diagnosis, and \u2018say yes to everything\u2019 attitude.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In March 2021, my ambitious, confident and effortlessly funny friend Reesh, was <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/323\/2022\/09\/MicrosoftTeams-image-24.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8490\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/323\/2022\/09\/MicrosoftTeams-image-24.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"138\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/323\/2022\/09\/MicrosoftTeams-image-24.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/323\/2022\/09\/MicrosoftTeams-image-24-1152x1536.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><\/a>diagnosed with a brain tumour. She believed that the best way to face treatment was to think positively. And, outwardly at least, she did. She didn\u2019t want to be defined by her illness, so we, her friends made sure she wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, on 19 February 2022, Reesh passed away. I\u2019ve never felt a loss like it. Inspired by her \u2018say yes to everything\u2019 attitude and buoyed by the reminder of how short life is, I signed up for the Half Marathon with #TeamCardiff to raise money for cancer research. I\u2019ve been blown away by the generosity of those who\u2019ve donated already. It adds extra fuel to my fire on those days where I don\u2019t fancy lacing up my trainers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/fundraising\/lausteph13\">Support Laura\u2019s fundraising.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/323\/2022\/09\/MicrosoftTeams-image-33-scaled-e1664803393880.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8549\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/323\/2022\/09\/MicrosoftTeams-image-33-scaled-e1664803393880.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gethin Bennett (LLB 2015, PgDip 2016) ran the Cardiff Half Marathon in October in memory of his father, who he lost to depression in 2007.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We sadly lost my dad to depression in 2007 when I was 14 and, over the last few years, I\u2019ve tried to raise money where I can, to support mental health charities and organisations. Being a Cardiff University alumnus, I remember receiving the e-mail about the Half Marathon and seeing that I could fundraise towards mental health research. So it made sense that I signed up and supported my old stomping-ground! He was, without a doubt, the nicest person I&#8217;ve ever met. A fellow Bluebird and Wales football fanatic, he was also a dedicated and accomplished runner. He was a massive fan of the Cardiff Half Marathon and first cajoled me into running it in 2016. He was a passionate member of #TeamCardiff and raised over \u00a3600 for Cardiff University research in the 2018 race.
